Unit 1 Festivals and Celebrations说课稿
殷凌
Good morning, everyone. I’m Yin Ling, an English teacher from No.22 Middle School. It’s my great honor to share my teaching ideas with you. My presentation consists of five parts: the analysis of teaching material and students, teaching theories, teaching and studying methods, teaching procedures, and blackboard design. The first part I will share is the analysis of teaching material. This lesson is from New Senior English for China, Student’s Book 3, Unit 1, the warming-up and reading part. The main topic of the passage is the introduction of different festivals and celebrations around the world. After this lesson, the students will learn more information about customs and culture and basic knowledge of festivals. Besides, their reading and speaking abilities can be developed as well. The next part is the analysis of students. My students are in senior 1, who have learnt English for many years. They’ve known many words and sentences, but their speaking and reading abilities are still very poor.
According to the New Standard Curriculum and the present situation, I set the teaching aims as follows: Firstly, knowledge aims. Students can grasp some new words, such as celebration, religious, dress up, play a trick on and so on. Moreover, students can understand the content of the passage and get familiar with different festivals around the world. They can also pay attention to their pronunciation and intonation in their
reading the passage and the discussion work in the class. Secondly, ability aims. Students can use reading strategies such as predicting what the passage is mainly about, skimming the main idea of the passage and scanning the specific information from the passage in reading process. Besides, students can get the main ideas and specific information about the festivals and celebrations during their fast reading and detailed reading. Thirdly, emotional aims. Students can experience different customs and culture about the festivals and learn to appreciate and respect culture in other countries. They can also be more confident and interested in learning English and they are able to speak English in public by cooperating and communicating with partners in their discussion. Based on the above analysis, the key points of this lesson are to get the main idea and the detailed information from the passage, understand and grasp the content of the passage, get familiar with different festivals and their celebrations around the world. The difficult points are to talk about and share their opinions about the festivals and celebrations and use reading strategies. In order to realize the principle that students will be centered, I decide to choose Communicative Approach and Task-based Teaching method as the main teaching methods. As for the studying method, I will lead students to discuss and learn in groups. Next, this is teaching theories. Then let’s come to the most important part-teaching procedures. The
first step is warming up. As the Dragon Boat Festival is coming, I will let students enjoy a short video about the festival. After the video, students will be able to list the activities people do during the vocation and find out the festival is in memory of Qu Yuan. I’ll ask students to brainstorm more Chinese traditional festivals and the activities people do. After that, I will ask them to list some festivals in Western countries. And then lead to our topic today-festivals and celebrations. Through the section, students will have strong awareness of Chinese traditional culture and be eager to know more about festivals in Western countries. The next step is pre-reading. I will present some pictures of festivals and the title-festivals and celebrations on the screen. Then ask students to predict what the passage is mainly about. Through the section, students will learn to predict the main idea of the passage and they also find it eager to read the whole passage. The third step is while-reading. Firstly, I would like to give students 4 minutes to have a global reading with two tasks. The first one is to find out the main idea of the passage and check whether their predictions are right or not. The second one is to find out the main idea of each paragraph. Global reading can help students understand the passage quickly and practice their logical thinking and their skimming and scanning skills are improved as well. Then comes to detailed reading. I will ask students to read the first paragraph carefully and answer the question: “What did most
ancient festivals celebrate?” And then explain
the new word “celebration”. After this, I will ask students to read the next paragraph and then find out three festivals in different countries to honor the dead and the activities people do. I will ask students to choose the best answers to five questions after they read the last three kinds of today’s festivals. Question 1: After reading Festivals to Honor people, we can infer that
. Question 2: According to paragraph 4, we can learn that
. Question 3: The biggest difference between the Chinese Spring Festival and Easter in Christian countries lies in
functions. Question 4: Which of the following festivals are not celebrated in Japan? Question 5: At festivals people can do all the following except ___. After checking the answers, I will ask students to discuss in groups about Harvest Festivals, especially Thanksgiving Day. At the same time, I will help students search for some information on the Internet. Students will show their opinions about this festival in class. After all these reading, students will understand and grasp the content of the passage and get familiar with different festivals and their celebrations around the world. Students’ sense of cooperation is cultivated, and they can also communicate with their partners about their opinions of the festivals and celebrations. The fourth step is summary. After reading the passage, I will ask students to review and retell the passage. Then do the summary. In this way, students’ operational ability are developed and they can develop their abilities of grammar filling as well. The fifth step is Post reading and homework. I
will ask students to work in pairs and have a discussion. “Which festival do you like best? What do people usually do during the festival?” Then choose three students to present their opinions. I will tell them that different countries have different customs and culture, which makes the world colorful and wonderful! After class, they need to choose two or three festivals and search more information about them and underline the words and expressions they don't understand in the text. In this activity, students’ creative thinking and sense of cooperation can be cultivated and they can talk about the festivals and celebrations. Students can experience different customs and culture about the festivals and learn to appreciate and respect culture in other countries. And they can search more information about the topic we have learned today as well. That’s all for my teaching procedures. Then comes to my blackboard design. They are Ancient Festivals and four kinds of Today’s Festivals.
That’s all. Thanks for your listening.
