Making a speech about sport

Teaching Aims: 1. Get students to know more about different kinds of sports by reading two articles . 2. Encourage students to make a speech about sports through group work to improve students’

reading and speaking abilities. 3. Instruct the students to learn and appreciate the spirit of sports.

Teaching Important and Difficult Points: How to lead students to make a speech about our school sports events and the spirit of sports through cooperation.

Step I

Lead –in

Show a short video about Jackie Chan, and have a free talk about it. Step II

Reading passage one Activity1: Reading and answering (Part1) Ask one of the students to read the first part and ask one question. Q: What requirements must be met before a sports event can be considered by the IOC? Activity2: Listening (Part2&3) Listen to part 2& 3 to pick out sports events mentioned in these two parts and tell the reasons why they are in or out . Activity3: Reading and answering (part4)

Ask students to read this part together by answering a question. Q: Which sports event is still trying to get into the Olympics? Why hasn’t it been approved by the IOC?

Activity4: Free talk

Q: Is it possible for Wushu to enter into the Olympics in the future?

Step III Making a speech about sports ----- Wushu 1.

Give tips for making a speech of our school sports events. 2.

Divide the whole class into several groups and ask them to make a speech about wushu 3.

Present their speech.

Step IV Reading passage two 1.

Ask students to read this passage as quickly as possible. Pay more attention to the teams and matches mentioned in this story. 2.

Have a deep understanding of this story. Step VI Homework

Ask students to write an article on sports events which are in or out in the Olympics.
