Reading II Language Points Teaching aims: 1. Help students to review some useful expressions in the Reading. 2. Help students to master the usage of some sentence patterns. 3. Help students to learn to design their examination questions. 4. Help students to learn to write a speech.

Teaching important and difficult points: How to help students to master the usage of some sentence patterns, learn to design their examination questions and learn to write a speech.

Teaching methods: Competition and discussion.

Teaching procedures and ways: In this class, there are four rounds of competition. Students are divided into four groups and they will have competitions.

Step 1: Challenge 1 Challenge your memory of useful expressions: There are ten pairs of useful expressions given Chinese from No.1 to No.10 and students can choose any favourite or lucky number. If they speak out their English correctly, they will be given one point. 1.

Step 2: Challenge 2

Master the usage of some sentence patterns: Show the sentence on the screen and ask the students to think about: Why use “to have been invited” here? Why not use “to be invited”? 1.

I am delighted to have been invited to your school to talk to you about the history and significance of the Olympic Games.

Step 3: Challenge 3 Ask the students to discuss in groups of four and design their own examination questions: Blank Filling (单句语法填空) Sentence Correction (单句改错) Each group is responsible for each part: Group 1: Paras.1-3

Group 2: Paras.4-5 Group 3: Paras.6-7

Group 4: Paras.8-10 Five minutes later, present their own examination questions and ask the other students to do their examination questions.

Step 4: Challenge 4 Writing a speech: First, ask the students to talk about how to write a speech: The beginning:

Good afternoon, students and teachers. As a member of…, I am delighted to have been invited to your school to talk to you about ….

The body: Do you know when…?

Did you know that …？

To begin with,…besides,…in addition…

The ending: We are looking forward to…

Join me in wishing…

Thank you.

Then, ask the students to write a speech：

Suppose you are Li Hua, a volunteer of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, please write a short speech within 100 words to introduce it. 要点如下：

1.北京成为唯一一个到目前为止举办了冬季和夏季奥运会的城市。(用定语从句）

2.无论来自哪个国家的运动员都允许参加此次冬奥会，体验中国文化, 更好的了解中国。（be allowed to do/ no matter what… / make it possible to do sth.）

3.中国政府和中国人民将会竭尽所能为此次奥运会的成功做出贡献。

(make great contributions to) 4.可适当增加内容，使文章更为流畅。

After finishing their writing, exchange their speeches with their partners and evaluate them according to evaluation criterion. 写作评价表

Finally, share some students’ speeches. Show the possible version on the screen and read it together. Good morning, boys and girls! As a volunteer of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games, I’ m delighted to be here to introduce it to you.

Do you know Beijing has become the only city that has held the Summer Olympics and will hold the 2022Winter Olympics? It is our perseverance that helped us to make so many achievements. As a Chinese, I feel so proud of it. Besides, more athletes and foreigners will experience Chinese culture , climbing the Great

Wall, tasting delicious Chinese food and so on. We do hope that the 2022 Olympic Games will make it possible for more people to know more about China. In addition, more athletes will be allowed to take part in the 2022 Beijing Olympics, competing for the gold medals in more events, no matter what nation they come from. In a word, the Chinese government and all Chinese will devote themselves to making great contributions to the success of the sports feast.
