Step2. Lead-in Enjoy a short video about alphago. And then ask the students do a reading comprehension about alphago zero. Google recently announced that the latest version of its AlphaGo program is now capable of mastering the game without any help from humans! This version, called AlphaGo Zero, only had knowledge of the rules for playing the Chinese game of Go. Within three days, AlphaGo Zero became good enough to beat previous versions by 100 games to 0.

In 1997, IBM’s Deep Blue chess playing machine beat a reigning world champion Gray Kasparov. Programs such as Deep Blue would examine all possible choices and its outcome, in order to predict the next move. This does not work for Go because it is

2

much more complicated than chess and has a huge number of possibilities. For example, after the first two moves. This does not work for Go because it is much more complicated than chess and has a huge number of possibilities. For example, after the first two moves in chess, there remains about 400 possible next moves. But in Go, there remains about 130.000 possible next moves. A researcher at Google described the search space of Go to be more than the number of atoms in the universe! “Search space” is the computer science term for the number of possibilities that have to be examined or searched through.

AlphaGo was designed to predict the next move based on data from millions of moves by human experts. Next, AlphaGo was improved to allow it to learn new strategies for itself. It used complex algorithms and neural network technology to make the best decision

AlphaGo became the first computer program to beat human experts in Go---most recently, the world’s best Go player, Ke Jie from China, in May 2017. for these competitions, AlphaGo still required huge amounts of data from previous games as well as computing power.

With AlphaGo Zero, the researchers at Google decided to only teach the program the rues of the game, and let it learn its strategies by playing against itself millions of times. 1. What breakthrough did AlphaGo Zero make? A. It defeats humans in Go

B. It has its own search space. C. It can learn by itself

D. It beats AlphaGo by 100:0 2. What is stressed in Para.2 A. The total possible moves in Go

B The atoms in the universe C. The intelligence of Deep Blue

D The difficulty of playing GO 3. What is AlphaGo's weakness? A. It needs more previous data.

B It fails to learn new strategies itself

C. It has to be taught by human experts.

D It lacks the ability of using algorithms 4. How did AlphaGo Zero do self-learning? A. By playing with AlphaGo

B .By challenging itself in Go C. By losing in Go millions of times.

D. By beating amateurs and experts. 【设计意图】引起学生兴趣,带着兴趣去阅读,初步考察阅读能力,从而有目的教学。

Step4. Consolidation

Kids seem to spend endless hours on smart-phones, computers and tablets these days. The best thing parents can do to prevent it is to encourage youngsters to spend more time outdoors in the sunlight.

There has been a massive rise around the globe in short-sightedness--- or myopia as it’s officially known -- over recent decades. Myopia or short-sightedness is becoming more common. Lack of natural light seems to be the key issue. “the main factor seems to be a lack of exposure to direct sunlight, because children who study a lot and who use computers or smartphones or tablet computers a lot have less opportunity to run around outside and are less exposed to sunshine and because of that children seem to be at more risk of developing short-sightedness.”

Professor Hammond says, “It may be that there’s no coincidence that in East Asian countries, the most myopic ones all relate to the maths league tables. These kids are being pushed with very intensive education from a very young age and spend a lot of time indoors studying everything close up. Therefore the concern is that all close work- like playing with the iPad and iPhone- carries the potential that it could make them more short-sighted.”

The best thing to do, say the experts, is to get children playing outside as much as possible. “

In a perfect world, probably on average across the week and the weekend, two hours a day outdoors is protective of becoming shortsighted in children . Healthy diet is really also important-in terms of getting oily fish, green vegetables, green leafy vegetables as much as possible.”

“What we need to look at is ways of modifying the impact that these activities have on their visual development.” Professor Hammond said. “ There are eye drops and other treatments to slow myopia progression. But in terms of preventing myopia itself. There are eye drops and other treatments to slow myopia progression. But in terms of preventing myopia itself, there isn’t any data out there at the moment in terms of the question. ‘could the drops we use slow progression or stop myopia developing at all? 1.
