Reading and writing

Teaching aims: The students are able to understand how the telephone was invented.

The students are able to know how to write an application letter. Teaching difficulty: How to help the students write an application letter. Teaching methods: Reading and writing Teaching procedures: Step 1 Reading

The students do a matching exercise to get ready for the reading. Give the students a brief introduction to Alexander Bell.

The students are asked to do the reading within 10 minutes and finish the four questions on page 26. 1.

What does Bell’s saying mean to you?

His saying means that it is important to be experimental. By being curious and exploring around a subject you may by chance come up with some new and original ways of solving a problem.

What do you think led to his success as an inventor of the telephone?

His curiosity and exploring spirit led to his success as an inventor of the telephone.

What inventions did Bell make?

Bell invented the telephone and the tetrahedron shape by chance. Both of these are extremely useful and still used today.

Why will he always be known as the inventor of the telephone?

He will always be known as the inventor of the telephone because it was a very popular invention and the patent made the most money ever.

Step 2 Writing

The students read the letter on page 27 and underline the sentence which they think are important. And then they write an application letter on their own.

If necessary, the teacher will give them a sample letter in class.

Dear Mr. Dyson,

I would like to apply to become an assistant in your company.

I expect to get a degree in mechanical engineering from Beijing University at the end of this year. I have always been a good student and last year I finished third in my year and my professor expects me to do even better in this year’s exams.

I have worked (in my holidays) for a company that makes toys for the Western market. I helped in the design department and designed a range of new panda playing cards and board games. It was fun and made me think that I would like to work in a real inventor’s company.

I understand that my qualifications and experience are what you look for in a new employee. So I would be grateful if you would consider employing me in your company.
