Xiao Qing (XQ) and Rachel Brown (RB)

are discussing whether cloning is cruel to animals or not. Fill in the blanks RB: Xiao Qing, do you think cloning’s _____?

XQ: What do you mean by that? The scientists are doing a __________ job. Soon they may be able to bring people’s

favourite _____ back to life! RB: Yes, I know. But doesn’t it seem cruel to you that it took ___ experiments before Dolly was ________cloned? Think

of all those live _____ and eggs that died in order for Dolly to be _____. I don’t approve of that!

XQ:

But, Rachel, be ___________. Isn’t it always like that with a _____ science? This is the way people learn to do

things

RB: I suppose so —

but they also make the animals do such _________ things. One poor cow was made to give birth to a

bison. What was the poor creature to think _______ it saw its baby? XQ: I don’t quite understand ____ so many

people are ________ cloning. I think the scientists _____ a bit of encouragement. Think of the _______. Cloning may help

medical science to produce cures for serious ________. RB:

Yes, I know and I agree with that. It’s just that I don’t agree with the ________.

XQ: Why not? RB:

Well, I think it’s a dead _____. Dolly the sheep was “middle-aged” when she was born _______ her DNA came from a middle-aged “mother”. ________ your grandmother would mean a new baby started life as an _____ lady! XQ: Really? I ______ thought of that. RB:

And it ________ the species. Cloning means that there’s _____ variety in the species. So the animals may not be able

to ______ a particular illness and they might _____ out. XQ:

Oh dear! And that was just what you and I were trying to ______. In spite of all these, don’t you think scientists would still be able to ____ the problems?

4. it may provide cures for serious illnesses Step Ⅲ

speaking task(page 17) 1. T: Let’s come to speaking. Whose idea do you agree with? Get ready to have a class discussion. Think about the reasons for your point of view. Use your own ideas as well as those in the text. You can refer to the expressions as following. That’s a good idea.

I cannot accept your argument because…

I support… because…

No, I can’t agree with… because…

I agree with…because….

How can you believe that? Your argument has convinced me because…

I would like to agree with you but…

I don’t care for your ideas because…

No, that is not reasonable because….

Your ideas sound very encouraging to me. 2. T: Well, you can divide yourselves into many groups as freely as you can, then have a class discussion. After discussion, ask some groups to tell them ideas, one group gives one view and states the reasons about it. G1: I agree with animals cloning. Reason: I think we must be safe so

7

animals are needed to test things first. G2: I agree with Xiao. Reason: we won’t know if cloning is safe for humans unless we try it on animals first. G3: I don’t accept Xiao. Reason: if we make animals live unnatural lives and do unnatural things, then it won’t be good for them or us. G4: xiao’s arguments have convinced me. Reason: cloning can help cure scrious illnesses in humans.

G5: I would like to agree with Rachel.

Reason: Weakens the species.

……

3. Summing up.

Give students a few minutes to consider whether there are more advantages than its disadvantages or not. The teacher should

encourage them to express it bravely, then make a summing up.

Summing up:

As the coin has two sides. Every technology can bring the advantages to our society, and also can bring the negative effects to our human beings. So when we judge a new technology good or not good, we should look at whether there are more advantages than its disadvantages or not. if we use it in a proper way, it can benefit our human beings a lot.
