一、teaching aims （一）knowledge aims 1. Be able to use the new words and phrases: guitar, join, dance, swim, sing, chess，paint, speak, play chess, speak English, play the guitar, want to join the music club/ art club. 2. Be able to use “can” and “can’t”. Master the general interrogative sentence of the modal verb “can”, its positive or negative answer, its affirmative sentence and negative sentence.

play ＋the +instrument （二）skill aims 1. Be able to use listening skills to comprehend their dialogues, such as listen for specific information etc. 2. Be able to talk what they can do and give responses. 3. Be able to read simple passage about interests and clubs by themselves. 4. 1. Arousing students’ interest in learning and speaking English.

2. Building their confidence by step by step approach and careful scaffolding. 3. Make the students experience the fun of learning English and have the courage to show their talent by the practice, and cover or participate in various extracurricular clubs by the group activities that is talking about each other’s strengths and interests. （四）learning strategies aims 1. To enable students to use modal verbs can to talk about one's ability by doing English reading, dialogue communication and complete the mission. 2. Let the students to actively participate in learning activities and to cooperate with others with the aid of multimedia course ware, recorders. （五）cultural awareness aims Let students know the different culture of different hobbies and customs.

四、teaching procedures （一）lead in Telling the whole class about the teacher’s hobby. Then asking students for their hobbies as a lead-in. Giving them general impression about this unit. （二）presentation 1. Asking the students to look at the pictures, there are some clubs in it. Looking at the clubs and recognizing them together. Helping the students to answer I want to join the art club and so on. If the school has clubs, the teacher can ask the students: What clubs do we have in our school? Let students answer it. 2. The teacher writes: What club do you want to join? I want to join… on the blackboard. Ask the students to practice it by pair work. Teacher will write what students said on the blackboard.

3. The teacher says to the students who say he/she wants to join the basketball club: Can you play basketball? Help the students say Yes, I can. / No, I can’t. Then 3

repeat with other actions or pictures, such as play volleyball. Show the students the activities the people in each club can do with the same step. Then repeat with dance, swim, play chess, paint, speak English and play the guitar with the help of doing the action.

4. The teacher can ask the students to make a survey in group of four about following questions：

Can you dance? /Can you paint? /Can you speak English? /Can you play chess? Then teacher will invite some students answer it by using first person, and invite some students answer it by using second person.

（三）practice To be more familiar with the words and phrases, the teacher can organize a competition game like this: Write the words and phrases on pieces of paper. Divide the whole class into four groups and asks two of the students from each group come to the front and do the action and guess according to these papers in a limit time. Then exchange. Finally, give award to the winner group. （四）consolidation 1. Look at the pictures 1a. Points to the activities the people in each club are doing. Say something about each club’s activity clearly. For example, this is a chess club. See the chess? They are playing chess. Ask the students to match each club activity in the picture with a word from the list. For example: A can dance, so we can write “a” beside dance.

2. Say each conversation with a student in Part 1a. After doing this,

play the recording the first time. Students only listen. Play the recording a second time. This time ask the students to listen to the conversations and write a number 1 next to the first conversation they hear, a number 2 next to the second one they hear, and a number 3 next to the third one they hear. Point out the sample answer. The answers are 2, 3, 1 3. 1c. Then ask students to practice the conversations in pairs. Ask them to use the vocabulary from 1a. As students work, listen in on various pairs so that you can check progress and help with pronunciation as needed. After students have had a chance to practice the conversations, ask pairs to come to the front of the room and act out one of their conversations. 五、homework Fill in the form.
