Newspaper Reading Teaching Plan

Learning aims and teaching objectives: By the end of the lesson, the students are expected to

a)get familiar with the columns of a newspaper. b)understand the functions of the titles in a newspaper. c) know how to read newspapers and what they read English newspapers for.

Focus of the lesson and predicted area of difficulty:

a) To give their own comments of an event, a film or a social phenomenon

b) To tell the use of titles in a newspaper article

highlighter Teaching procedures: Step 1 Lead-in 1.

Show Ss two pieces of news 1)

Henry Lau started his career in South Korea and now he is in his first-ever Hollywood film. 2)

World-famous architect Ieoh Ming Pei died at 102 on May 16.

（设计意图：选取世界热点话题和身边的新闻，导入主题－报刊阅读，开门见山。）

Step 2 Structures of a newspaper Ask the students to take out 21st Century Teens Juniors and have an answer race.

1.Can you tell me how many columns there are in Teens Juniors? What are they? 2.Where can you find these columns? 3. Please look at each column, and tell us what is in each column? 4. What is your favourite column? 65. How do you choose the article you like to read in each column? （设计意图：梳理本节课所用报纸的结构，以便学生能更好更快地找出自己所喜欢的栏目和文章。）

Step 3 Function of the titles in the newspaper Encourage the students to go through all the titles and try to answer the questions below: 1.

Why do they use phrases instead of sentences? 2.

Why do they use simple present tense instead of simple past tense? 3.

Why do they question mark?

反思，讨论，合作和探究等方式，发现语言规律，发展自主学习能力。）

Step 4 Discussion Which article are you most interested in? What is it about? Why do you like it? （设计意图：让学生互相分享自己看的报纸内容，培养他们的英语理解能力和概括能力）

Step5 Guide-reading Before reading the article, raise the following questions : 1.

What are they doing on the picture? 2.

Can you ask some questions about the article by using wh-question words? （设计意图：通过讨论报纸首页的图片，在未读文章前对文章进行提问，激发学生的阅读兴趣，让学生带着期待和想象开启报刊文章的阅读之旅。) While-reading Let Ss Listen to the tape and answer 2 questions 1.

(设计意图：从介绍烧烤的要素入手，设置Wh问题，引导学生快速读取文章信息，解答心中的疑问）

Ask the students to sum up food for American people in summer

(设计意图：通过归纳得到文章的基本信息，为后面的设计做铺垫。同时引入生词grill, barbecue...）

Step 6 Selected reading Get the students to read another newspaper article . Read the article and fill in the blanks. （设计意图：让学生自读文章完成任务性阅读练习，将报刊阅读与考试训练结合在一起）

Step7 Post reading Work in a 4-student group and think of similar things and different things in summer between the USA and China and finish the Venna-gram. （将两篇文章结合在一起，让学生进行对比归纳共同点与不同点，了解英美文化差异）

Step 7 Conclusion

Tell the students that reading newspapers really benefits us a lot. Reading English newspapers can not only keep us informed but also improve our English. Reading makes a full man. （设计意图：总结阅读英文报刊的好处，希望学生养成阅读英文书籍及报刊的习惯。）
