7B Unit 7 Reading I --What a brave young man! Analysis on the teaching material The reading material is about how Lin Tao successfully helped to save his neighbor from a big fire. Every student is able to know something about what to do in a fire after learning it. The genre of the text is a news report. Teaching goals: By the end of the lesson, students are expected to: 1. master the meanings of some new words in the text and get some details about Lin Tao's story through skimming,scanning and detailed-reading. 2. acquire more knowledge about how to survive a fire. 3. have a talk-show with their partners based on Lin Tao’s heroic story. 4. have a job interview of the little fireman to review the whole story. Teaching difficulties:

To use the key words and phrases to talk about what happened to Lin Tao in the form of a talk show. 2. To talk about how to be a little fireman freely and confidently. Teaching procedure Step1 Lead in (4’) 1.

Lead in the topic by playing a short video clip about the big fire which happened in Notro Dame de Pairs. The video ends with the sentence ‘Every coin has two sides.’

The teacher then ask questions about what should we do when we are caught in a fire? Then introduces the topic about fire. Step2 Fast reading (10’) ▪

Skimming (4’) ①

The teacher asks students to open their books and find out the answer to the following questions within 5 seconds. -what is the title of this article? -where can we find this article? - What is this news about? -- How could you get the main idea in such a short time? (We could get the general idea from the title and the first para.) ②

The students are then asked to figure out how many paragraphs there are in the report. →

Listen and follow it softly.Pay attention to the pronunciation and intonation. →Summarize the main idea of each paragraph. (Some phrases are given to help. ▪

Scanning (4’) The teacher gives the definitions of a certain new word or phrases and students have to find out the word in the news. It is made a competition to see who would be the first to get the answer. Step3Detailed reading (16’)

Students are encouraged to think of some DIY questions (When, Where, Who, Why, How), and then answer them. (In this stage, the students will get more familiar with the meanings of the words, and review some details of the story) Pair work: get the students to consider what we can learn from Lin Tao’s actions, such as keep calm, ensure your safety first etc. Group discussion: four pictures about what we may do in a fire are showed. The students need to figure out which are right things to do, which are not. For those wrong things, the students are supposed to point out what we should do instead. Pair work: guide the students to use some key words and phrases to create a dialogue between Lin Tao and a host of a TV show. Step4 Post-reading (10’) ▪

Pair work: Basic requirements of a little fireman (10’) Work in groups and set up an job interview. One of you is going to apply for the position of a little fireman. Others are interviewers. The interviewers need to concern about the interviewee’s understanding of the fire, qualities he/she possesses, and the reason why he/she wants to be a fireman. Later you’ll have to come to the front and present your interview. Step 5: homework Homework: write an article about your reflection on fires.
