Thoughts on the design: 这是本单元的第二课时，在第一课时“Welcome to the unit”中已经通过多媒体向学生展示了许多关于“sports”的图片和信息，同学们进行了热烈讨论，学生对奥运会有了一定的了解,获得了一定的背景知识。本节阅读课是一位奥委会成员面对高中生的一篇演讲，告诉学生奥运会发展的历史，以及六位著名运动员的奥运会事迹和成就。本课时运用多媒体增加课堂容量，提高课堂效率和学生的积极性。通过设计有助于提高学生的阅读概括水平与总结能力的练习，指导学生提高阅读速度和把握作者演讲思路; 最后通过任务设计提高学生运用语言解决问题的能力，变学习语言为运用语言。

Teaching aims: 1.To know the history of the Olympics. 2.To learn the spirits of sports stars. 3.To learn how to make a good speech. Teaching aids:

1. the multi-media. 2.the blackboard.

Teaching procedures: Step1. Lead in 1.

Show pictures about Olympic Games to motivate the Ss’ enthusiasm. 2.

Talk about the Olympics and encourage the students to share their information and express their opinions.

As we all know, the Olympic Games are held every four years and it is a great honor for a country to host the Games.

How much do you know about the Olympics, for example, its history, ceremonies and sporting events?

1.Where did the ancient Olympics begin? 2.When and where did the modern Olympics begin? 3.What does the five rings on the Olympic flag stand for? ... ... [Explanation]

在“Welcome to the unit”的基础上进一步向学生补充背景知识，激发学生的阅读兴趣，为学生在阅读中获得成就感打下基础。

Step2. Fast reading 1. Ask Ss to skim the speech and divide it into four parts, then find the main idea of each part.

Part 1: (Para 1) the topic of the speech Part 2: (Para 2～4) the history & significance of the Olympics Part 3: (Para 5～8) some famous sports stars and their great contributions Part 4: (Para 9) the closure of the speech [Explanation]

Step3. Careful reading I. Ask students read the speech carefully and find the detailed information about Part2 &Part3. Part2

Read para 2-4 for information about the history of the Olympic

III. Presentation Enjoy the pictures, choose one of the following athletes, and make a short presentation to introduce him or her. [Explanation] 通过练习引导、帮助学生把握作者写作思路，这样有利于学生把握文章段落中心；培养学生善于抓住段落中心及在阅读中处理信息的能力；引导学生快速准确的把握文章细节。并通过一个短的presentation检测学生对课文信息的理解和整合能力。（注：阅读的过程实质是获取、加工、处理信息的过程，要求读者积极的思维活动。）

Step4. Post-reading

Ask students to think about “What fine qualities do you think these athletes have in common?”

Let them discuss in groups, then share their answers together in one or two words. confident, independent, patient, determined, positive, brave, optimistic,

Step5. Discussion Hosting the Olympic Games is a great honour for a country, but at the same time it costs a lot of money and resources.

通过小组成员间相互合作，讨论，培养学生思考质疑能力，使学生能够提出个人的观点，清晰的表达自己的见解，听取别人的意见。并为下一步写作提供参考素材。

Step6. Reading Strategy Ask students to find out the ways to read and make a good speech. A speech is a formal talk that a person gives to an audience. A good speaker should keep the audience interested all the time. ways to make a good speech:

1.tell interesting stories,2.use quotations 3.present statistics , 4.ask questions…
