I. Teaching aims and learning objectives By the end of the lesson, students should be able to: 1. To identify specific characteristics in a description of goldfish . 2. To listen for detail and extract specific information . 3. To talk about the students’ favourite pets.

II. Teaching contents 1. New words and phrases: put…. in the sun, once a day, grow up, make some noise, weigh up to 40 grams, join the Pet Club, a talk about goldfish 2. New structure:

how to look after them

how do you look after your dog? be easy to look after III. Focus of the lesson and predicted area of difficulty 1. Some tips about listening; 2. How to grasp the main ideas of the listening material 3. Talk about the students’ faourite pets. IV. Teaching procedures A. Goldfish Step1 Pre-listening 1. Play a guessing game: Which animal is it? a. He is Mr. King, most of them are afraid of him. b. It’s black and white, it likes eating bamboo.

c. He is good at English, He always shouts ‘one, one, one’

d. She is pretty, but she can’t live without water.

2. Asking a question: Would you like to have a goldfish as a pet? and why? Let the students fill in the blankets about goldfish. A goldfish isn’t any _______.

A goldfish doesn’t ________.

A goldfish doesn’t ________.

We don’t need to ________ it much.

It doesn’t need a gentle _________.

Step2 While- listening 1. First Listening:

T: Peter has more questions about goldfish. (show some questions.) now Peter is listening to a talk on goldfish and making some notes. Listen to the talk and help him check his notes to see if they are true or false.. Play the tape of A1, the students finish the exercises. If students have some difficulties, play the tape again and pause on the key words. （活动方式：独自完成——组内互查、纠错——个人汇报）

2. Further listening:

1). T: Peter recorded the talk. Listen again and ask the students to finish the sentences. Ask the students to predict some information before listening. 2). Play the tape for the students to listen and complete the rest blankets. 3). Ask eight students read eight sentences and ask other eight students to write the answers on the blackboard. 4). Let the students read the sentences together for twice. 5). Ask the students to have a quick review about goldfish with some given words in groups of four.. （活动方式：小组活动——小组汇报）

Step3 Post- listening Teacher explains Part A3 and ask the students to finish the dialogue according to the information they have collected. Ask two students to read the whole dialogue, all the class check the answers. Work in pairs and act it out. Write “ once a day, make some noise, feed often” on the blackboard.

B. Speak up: How do you look after your pets? Step1 Lead-in Discuss how to look after goldfish in groups of four. Step2 Listen and fill in the form T: Daniel, Millie, Peter and Amy are also talking about how they look after their pets. Listen to their conversation and fill in the form.

Play the tape twice for the students to listen. Step3. Listen and answer Ask the students to read the dialogue and answer three questions.

Then check the answers and write “brush her fur, walk him” on the blackboard.

Step4. Free talk: How to look after your pets? Give the students five minutes to prepare their dialogues and act them out. C. Extension work Listen to ’10 promises to my dog’, and answer questions
