Teaching procedure Step 1

Lead in

Greetings and play a short video about Tangshan earthquake.

Step 2 Skimming Task 1: Skim the whole passage and find out the topic sentence of each paragraph. Task 2: Skim the whole passage again and try to divide it into 3 sense groups with 3 key words: sign, damage, rescue.

Step 3 Scanning Task 1. Read para.1 quickly and locate the foreshadows of the earthquake. Task 2. Scan para.2 and complete the following sentences with numbers. Task 3. Scan para.3 to locate the sentences reporting the damage. Task 4. Read para.4 and explain why the author said “ALL HOPE WAS NOT LOST.”
