Do you know the man in the picture? He is the newly-elected American president, Donald J. Trump. Who is this beautiful young lady? She is Mr. Trump’s daughter, Ivanka Trump. She is not only beautiful, but also brave and intelligent. In order to help her father to win the presidential election, she worked with her father. Once she made a speech to the voters. Please listen to a part of her speech, and write down the missing words while listening. Please look at your handout paper. Let’s do activity 1. What grammar structure did she use? Degrees of comparison. Today we’ll learn this useful grammar together. Step 2 Observation and Thinking 1

Look at this picture, what’s this animal? How about this one? Can you guess their weight? Can you compare their weight? Use the words in the brackets.

(1) A panda is 10 times as heavy as a golden monkey.

(2) A panda is 10 times heavier than a golden monkey.

(3)A panda is 10 times the weight of a golden monkey.

Now look at another pair. As we all know, winter in Harbin is much colder than that in Chengdu. Can you compare their temperature?

(1) Winter is twenty times as cold in Harbin as in Chengdu. (2) Winter is twenty times colder in Harbin than in Chengdu. (3) Winter in Harbin is twenty times the coldness of winter in Chengdu. Next, please compare the height of Mount Qingcheng and Mount Everest.

(1) Mount Everest is seven times as high as Mount Qingcheng. (2) Mount Everest is seven times higher than Mount Qingcheng. (3) Mount Everest is seven times the height of Mount Qingcheng. And please compare the size of my house and my aunt’s house.

(1) My aunt’s house is twice as large as my house.

(2) My aunt’s house is twice larger than my house.

(3) My aunt’s house is twice the size of my house.

Can you draw a conclusion of the way to compare different items?

(1) 倍数

+ as +adj.+ as …

(2) 倍数+ 比较级

+ than …

(3) 倍数+the(size, weight,height, length,width, depth...)+ n. + of…

Step 3 Observation and Thinking 2

Now look at the red point, it’s becoming bigger and bigger. When a kite is flying in the sky, the higher it flies, the smaller it appears. Please look at your handout paper, let’s finish activity 2. Complete the sentences with the words in the box in suitable comparative forms. Please follow the

example: Air pollution is getting worse and worse. (1). ________________ people are, ________________ they will live. (2). ________________ we recycle, __________________we waste. (3). Winter is coming. The weather is getting ___________________.

(4). According to scientists, the universe is getting ____________________. (5). ________________ you practice, _________________fluently you will speak. (6). I found it ____________________ difficult to solve this complicated problem.

Time is enough. Let’s check answers.

Now let’s play a game, please create more sentences by using the structure “ the more...,the

more..” And we do it from one student to another student in a line.

1.The more balanced a diet you have, the healthier you will become.

2. The healthier you are, the more energetic you will be.

3.The more energetic you are, the better you will study.

4.The better you study, the greater progress you will make.

5. The greater progress you make, the happier you will be.

So we can say “Happiness is a comparative degree”. Now can you draw a conclusion of the

following structure. We use

1) -er form + and +

-er form

2) the + -er form, the + -er form Step 4 Observation and Thinking 3

Open your English books and turn to P47. Look at

the following sentences. Underline the adverbs used to modify the comparative expression. Let’s practise using them. Look at activity 4 on handout, and add some words to make complete sentences, using degrees of comparison. You can do it in pairs.

3

(1). this metal/a bit/ heavy/that steel (2). this book/a lot/interesting/that one (3). a nail/rust/much/easily/in the water/in the air (4). chemistry/rather/easy/English
