Teaching procedures: Step 1 Leading in and revision a.

Revise different kinds of clauses we’ve learnt and summarize the conjunctions in Noun Clauses by asking questions as follows: 1.

How many kinds of clauses have we learnt and what are they? 2.

What do all the clauses have in common? 3.

What are the conjunctions in Noun Clauses? 4.

How many kinds of Noun Clauses are there and what are they? 5.

Of the four noun clauses which are you most familiar with? b.

Make sentences with object clause with the students together. I hope that we can have a good time here. I wonder if/whether we can have a good time together. We want to know who will teach us English today? Do you know what we are going to do today? We want to know which of us will answer questions. I don’t know when we will meet. We’ll learn why conjunctions are so important.

c.

Revise the other three kinds of Noun Clauses by making sentences with the same clause. 主从:Who will do the job has not been decided yet. Whoever will do the job will be paid. 宾从:I don’t know who will do the job. 表从:My concern is who will do the job. 同位从:The question who will do the job is worth considering. Design intention: This part is designed to revise what students have already learned about clauses and Noun Clauses by making sentences and to make connections with the following parts, hoping to make them feel easier to put Noun Clauses into practice.

Step 2 Revision a. Find out the types of noun clauses and use of conjunctions by given some sentences. 1. I wonder if you can give me some advice on how to make friends.

2. It is necessary that we take plenty of boiled water every day. 3. This is why English has so many difficult rules that confuse people. 4. We consider it necessary that he should improve his pronunciation. 5. What impressed me most was his kindness. 6. I have no idea when he will come back. b. Fill in the form to check what students have memorized about the use of conjunctions in Noun Clauses. Design intention: This part is designed to revise the use of conjunctions in Noun Clauses to check students’ understanding of conjunctions.

Step 3 Application Present students with some incomplete sentences for them to fill in the blanks with proper conjunctions according to the meaning of the given sentences. 1. _________ the delayed flight will take off depends much on the weather. 2. We promise ________ attends the party a chance to have a photo taken with the movie star. 3. Grandma pointed to the hospital and said, “That’s ________ I was born.”

4. Jim hasn’t decided ________ club he would like to join, music or English.

5. Pick yourself up. Courage is doing ________ you are afraid to do. 6. There is no doubt ________ everyone needs to make their contribution to environment protection. Design intention: After the previous revision parts, it is time to check if students can transfer what they’ve learned theoretically to practice.

Step 4 Differentiating and analyzing some similar groups of sentences a.

Four groups of similar sentences are ready for students to differentiate. They can discuss with their partners to find out the differences between the sentences and confusions.

1.

The only thing ________ we can do is to wait.

(

)

We are worrying about ________ we should do next. (

)

2.

It is there that accidents often happen.

(

)

It is clear that not all boys like basketball.

(

)

3.

Whoever breaks the law is to be punished.

(

)

Whoever breaks the law, he is to be punished.

(

)

4.

The news that we won the game is very exciting.

(

)

The news that he told me is very exciting.

(

)

A 5-minute video is played for the students to check their answers and clarify their

confusions. Design intention: This is the most difficult part for the students. It is designed not only to clarify the differences between sentences but also to inform students to develop a habit of thinking and analyzing properly.

Step 5 Writing

Translate the four Chinese sentences into English by using Noun Clauses. These four sentences can be joined together to make the body of a letter of making apologies. 1.我很抱歉地告诉你明天我不能跟你去书店了。

2.原因是我得在家照顾妹妹。

3.我想知道我们是否能改到周日十点在学校门口见。

4.我希望这个变化不会给你带来太多麻烦。

Design intention: The last part is designed to encourage students to put all the knowledge of Noun Clauses into use by making sentences that can be used in writing (such as in a letter of making apologies). It is also intended to convey that Noun Clauses are used in our daily English learning and it is not hard to use it.
