Teaching design for Advertisements

find the logics in a certain group of sentences in Advertisements 3.

Warming up

To start the class, ask students whether they know the logics of a passage, in a paragraph and between paragraphs. Remind them of the importance of finding the logics. Tell them that if they want to find the logics, they should learn to analyze the structure of a passage, know how to develop a paragraph and find the relationships between paragraphs.

Step 2

Structure analysis

Have the students read the passage with blanks and ask them which blanks they need to fill in first.

Analyze with the whole class what they need to know to guess out the first and the last missing sentences. Ask students whether they know the structure of an expository article. Then collect answers from them. Write down the basic structure of expository writing and the main function of each part. Part

Collect possible expressions of the first and the last blanks. Then explain to students the answers to the two blanks. Tell them that the sentence in the first blank serves as the introduction which tells readers why this passage is written and that the sentence in the last blank is a conclusion based on the statement in the first paragraph and facts and examples in the body paragraphs.

Step 3

Paragraph development

Get students to move on to the next task. Ask them whether they know how to develop a paragraph. Write down the basic formation of a paragraph:

supporting information + topic sentence Have the class focus on the body paragraphs and analyze them paragraph by paragraph. Ask them to find out the possible relationships between the missing statement and the sentences before and after it.

Get students to write down the possible missing expressions of the body paragraphs (2,3 4,5,7) and list reasons separately.

Ask students to think about the meaning of the subtitle Does an advertisement tell people the complete truth? ---- Tricks are always used in ads.

Step 4

Inter-paragraph analysis

Have the class go through the whole text and find out the relationships between paragraphs. Get students to focus on the position of blank 4 and ask them what might be the feature of the first sentence of a body paragraph. Tell them one of the functions is to connect the paragraph above and introduce to another paragraph. Since the paragraph above talks about the tricks used in ads while this paragraph deals with PSAs, which is meant to benefit the public, a transitional sentence is needed.

Step 5

Summary

Get students to summarize the features of expository writing and report how to solve the problems in reading comprehension choosing five out of seven.

Step 6

Homework

Hand out a passage of reading comprehension choosing five out of seven and ask students to apply what they have learned in this period.
