Learning Strategies
1.

Teaching procedures Step 1
Warming-up and Lead-in 1.
Show Ss a short video of their classmate’s fast-paced life. It’s about a student’s daily after-school activities. After the vedio, ask questions about the video. T:
What after-school activities will Jiang Xue do in the video? What do you think of her? Does she feel stressed out?
S: …
Step 2:Pre-reading T: Jiang Xue is a typical Chinese student.I mean, these kinds of problems are quite common in China. But what about the students in America?Do they have after-school activities?Do they like it?
T presents a picture and the title of the passage in PPT.Then guides Ss to scan the title and illustration to predict the content of the passage. T:What are these American students doing?
Look at the title, which word catches your eyes most? Why?
Step 3:While-reading 1.
Fast Reading(skimming) Ss read the passage fast(Look quickly through a piece of writing to find the main idea without reading every word.Usually read the first sentence or last sentence in each paragraph) and match the main idea with each paragraph. (Through this part , students can understand the general idea of each paragraph and the structure of the passage .)
2.
Intensive Reading Ss read for details. First, guess the meanings of new words according to the contextual clues and finish 2c.Prompt Ss to identify the clues which help them guess the meanings of the words in bold,Point out that the clues may be in a single word,a phrase,a description,or a piece of information.Second, fill in blanks to understand the passage better. Next ,Make a conclusion of each paragraph.
(Through this part ,students can practice guessing the meanings of new words , scanning—move the eyes quickly down the page to find specific information and prepare for the next part .)
3.
Draw a mind-map. After answering the detail questions,T writes some key words on the blackboard such as problems、opinions、Cathy Taylor、Linda Miller、doctor and so on.Guide Ss to draw a mind-map with these words to clear the clues and review the passage.
Step 4:Post-reading
Make a group interview. Teacher creates a situation that a reporter is interviewing three or four people—Cathy Taylor、Linda Miller、a doctor and so on.Ask Ss to use the information in the passage to make a conversation about different people’s opinions on after-school activities.Ss work in groups of 4 or 5.They can even speak out their opinions.T guides Ss to use the structures to express their opinions: e.g. I believe…
I don’t think…(I think…)
People shouldn’t…(People should…)
…is not good…(…is good…)
It’s important to…
T gives students a few minutes to discuss and then provide the opportunity for them to present their conversations.
Step 5 Conclusion
Different people have different opinions on whether we should have after-school activites.Cathy Taylor thinks it’s important for kids’ future.Linda Miller disagrees. She thinks people shouldn’t push kids so hard.Doctors believe too much pressure is not good for kids’ development. What do you think of after-school activities? What should you do to relax?
Step 6 Homework Discuss the questions with your partner and write them down. 1.What do you think of after-school activities? 2.What should you do to relax?
