Lesson Plan I.

Background information: School: Chongqing

Students: Junior high school students from Grade 10

(They are not active in class, and they lack interest in learning English. They have learned the new words and previewed the passage before.)

Material: New Senior English for China Student’s Book 1 Unit 5 Nelson Mandela - a modern hero, Reading. This unit is about the great persons home and abroad. Students can learn the experiences of the heroes and can be inspired by their spirits.

Teaching Procedure: Stage 1. Lead in (1 min)

Talking about the heroes

The teacher will ask the students about their heroes and give the definition of heroes with the examples of Norman Bethune and Sun Yat-sen.

Stage 2. Pre-reading (15 mins)

Brief introduction to Nelson Mandela and the racial discrimination in South Africa through some pictures Stage 3. While-reading (15 mins)

Step 1: Skimming. (3 mins)

The teacher will ask the students to skim the passage and answer the three questions

Step 2: Scanning. (2 mins)

Task 1. The teacher will ask the students to skim the passage and figure out the timeline of Elias’ life. Then the teacher will lead to the turning point.

Task 2. Based on the turning point, the teacher will guide the students to divide the passage into two parts and conclude the main idea of each part.

Task 3. Careful reading to find out the different situations before and after Elias met Mandela.

Task 4. Comprehensive questions for students to deepen their understanding of why they chose to answer violence with violence.

Stage 4. Post-reading (9 mins)

Step 1. Discussion on the greatness of Mandela

Step 2. The teacher will introduce the writing skill of Indirect description.

Step 3. Students are required to conclude the structure of this passage through mind map under the guidance of the teacher.

Step 4. A video for students to understand the meaning of “love” and “forgiveness”.

Surf the internet or go to the library to get more information about Mandela. 2.
