Teaching aims(教学目的)

Knowledge aims: 1. Get students to learn more about archaeology. 2. Let students learn how to write an article of description of archaeological finds. Ability aims: 1. Train students speaking ability, especially describe something. 2. Develop students’ writing ability to write a description and practice giving opinions. Emotional aims: 1. Enrich the Ss‘s knowledge of archaeology, Anthropology as well as history. 2. Train students’ ability to cooperate with others.

Teaching emphasis(教学重点)

and give opinions. Teaching methods(教学方法) Task-based method and group work Teaching aids(教具准备) Multi-media and slide Teaching procedures

(教学过程) Step1. Ask the students to have a free talk with you. Ask Ss to answer the following questions.

(1)

Have you ever heard about Sanxingdui? (2)

Do you know what has been found in Sanxingdui? step2. Ask Ss to look at the pictures on P44 and tell them they are what have been found in Sanxingdui. And then let them discuss the following question. 1. Guess what they are. 2. Describe these objects and fill in the form object

3. Discuss what these objects were possibly used for. First look at the questions on the screen again. What are the answers? S1: In my opinion, the first one looks like a tree. It might be made of bronze. Also, it might be used to offer sacrifices to gods or ancestors. S2: I think the second picture is an animal-face image. It might also be made of bronze. It might stand for authority. S3: It looks like a bird. I think it could be made of bronze and it might be an ornament. S4: It may be a pottery pot, which is used to contain boiled water or wine. Your guesses sound reasonable. Look at the screen. These are what I have found about these things.

Show the following. 1. bronze sacred tree

442×802- 52kb. 2. bronze animal-face image

520×364-55kb.

3. bird-shaped ornament 1s500×815-50kb t1. 4. pottery pot

579×924-170kb. Step 3. Ask students to learn how to write a description.

Researching cooperatively & answering questions(合作探究, 解决问题) 1. Learn the writing tips In archaeology you will often be asked to write a description of the facts that have been found in an excavation. Any description needs adjectives and often more than one. First there are two general rules about their order: general before specific (a large Chinese vase) opinion before description (a beautiful new car) Secondly, if you use two or more adjectives in English, they generally go in front of the noun and have a fixed order:

1 2 3 4 5 6 noun size shape colour origin material use a short slim

black

British

a small blue

Chinese

girl

serving

dish

2. Write a paragraph about an object in a formal style. Now suppose you work in a museum, your job is to describe the objects as they are brought to the museum. Look at the pictures and discuss about these objects. When you have finished, exchange your writing with your partner and help each other by making useful suggestions on content, grammar, spelling and punctuation. (Show the following on the screen. Give the students three minutes to discuss)

You may find these expressions useful.

It looks like\as if....

It could be made from…

It is … high\long

It may be used as/for....

It represented….

It seems that…

2

It could be made from

....I think….Our evidence suggests that.. It may have been used for

It could be ... because.... 3.

Show two good passages from the students in our class and find out what are good expressions and make necessary corrections. Then enjoy and analyze two model passages from the Sample description for guidebook .

Sample description for guidebook

1 Special bronze tree

It is 395 cm high with some branches on the tree. There are three kinds of fruit on each branch. One of the fruit is a peach. The tree may have had a religious meaning and is connected with the sky and the earth. 2 Bronze mask

This is a man-face mask with two eyes, two ears and hair. It fits over an adult face. You can see the teeth and they look as if the man was smiling. The eyebrows grow into the hair. The nose is very flat. This mask may have represented a god so that the person who wore it would have acted the role of the god. 3. Bronze bird

This is a very realistic and lively bronze statue of a bird. Its wing is not realistic but shows some feathers pointing to the sky. It represented the idea that all animals have spirits and birds were especially important. It may have been used for religious purposes. 4 Clay pot

This clay pot was found with the bronze objects already described. It rests on three thick legs which makes it very sturdy. It has a long straight body ending in a dome at the top of the lid. There is also an open mouth-like part to pour the liquid in or out. The handle reaches from below the open hole to the beginning of the three think legs.

It could have been used to hold and pour wine or other liquid. It is elegant enough to be used by rich people at parties. The owners of this object clearly wanted a functional jug but one that had style and elegance. They were clearly people with artistic taste. It must have come from an old but sophisticated civilization. Task 2 Further discussion What can we learn from these objects? 1.We can learn that the people at Sanxingdui could make bronze. 2.They could use it extremely skillfully to make very special objects that looked like many of the things the people saw around them. 3.They were also able to make objects for decoration which suggests that they had a developed culture. 4.They may have used these objects for religious purpose. If so, they may have thought that natural objects contained spirits that could influence the life of the Sanxingdui people. Step4. Summing &chewing, summarizing knowledge(总结梳理)

Task 1. Turn to page 84. Read the instructions and discuss the painting and then fill in the chart in Part 1.

A sample dialogue: S1: What can you find in the painting? S2: I can find some people are sitting on low stools, served by someone.

S1: Yes. In the lower part of the picture, someone is holding a plate with meat of poultry. And

3

on the table there are other kinds of food. S2: Look. There hang some clothes on the wall. They had to take off clothes when having dinner. S1: I agree. And we can see that their meals are arranged well. Maybe the soup must be first served, and then comes the meat. S2: Do you find someone dancing?

S1: Yes. Maybe they are watching the dancing while eating.

Ask the students to read their answers.

Evidence from the wall painting Food Someone is holding a plate with goose

meat in it Arrangements for the meal Something like soup are served first, then

another one presents the meat ... Clothes Clothes are hanging on the wall Hygiene The room is clean and they took off

clothes when eating.

Entertainment Someone is dancing

People Some are sitting on the tools and served by others who dress differently. Task 2. Ask the students to show their conclusion after discussion.

A description of ancient Egyptian life: The few furnishings in the ancient Egyptian home were simple in design. The most common piece of furniture was a low stool, used by all Egyptians including the pharaoh. And someone was dancing for them while they are eating. Perhaps there was music too. It is reasonable to assume that the people sitting on the stools in the painting were of higher social positions.

As we can see from the painting, there hung some clothes on the wall. It seems that they should take off clothes when having dinner. We think they were doing well in hygiene.

Our evidence suggests that the ancient Egyptian people were very particular to their food and clothes, and paid great attention to hygiene.

Step5.

Homework

1. Go over all the words and phrases in this unit; 2. Finish the writing task unfinished in class; 3. Finish the writing task.
