Activities:
一、Introduce modal verbs with the following:
can- could; shall - should
must, can / could, may / might, ought to
②
need, dare
I need a dictionary, so I need to go to the bookstore.
You needn't tell him about it as I have told him.
Who would dare to tell him?
He dared not go there at night.
How dare you ask me such a question?
The room needs cleaning.
③
shall / should /, will / would
I shall study harder at English.
He will go to Shanghai. 3、
1)can, could
e.g.1. He can speak three languages.
2. We have a lot of food. We can't be lack of food.
3. Can/Could you lend me your
bike?
4. ---Could you lend me your car?
---Yes, I can./----No, I can't. 比较:can
/ be able to:can 的形式只有can / could两种。
be able to 的形式有am / is / are able to; was / were able to;
have / has been able to等多种。
e.g. My brother can play table tennis.
My brother is able to dive under water for 10 minutes.
He was able to escape the earthquake. 2)
may, might
① may 表示
e.g. 1. You may use my book.
2. May I come in?
3. She may/might come to see
you tomorrow, but I am not sure.
4. May you succeed! 3)
must
①
have to
e.g. 1. You must finish your homework today.
2. You mustn't talk to your parents like that.
3. He must be at home now.
4. Your mother must be waiting for you.
5. He must have been to Beijing before.
6. The door is locked; she can't be at home. 5)
shall
①
e.g. 1. Don't worry. You shall have the tickets for
the game.
2. He shall get punished if he breaks the law.
3. Our school rules shall take effect this week.
4. Shall I close the fan?
5. Shall he come to see you this afternoon? 6)
should ①
比较:ought to:
①
e.g.
1. You should study hard.
2. You should have finished your homework on time.
3. His words should be true.
4. How should you behave like that!
5. He suggested that we should make full use of our time to study.
6. You ought to be attentive at class. 7)
will
e.g.
1. I will do everything I can to help you.
2. ——Would you come over to dinner tonight?
—OK. I will bring a bottle of red wine.
3. Will you give this book to Mary?
4. Fish will die without water. 8)would

还可以构成would like to do, would rather 9)情态动词表推测的用法
一般用must (一定),may(可能),might / could (也许,或许)表示肯定的推测。例如:
He must / may / might be at home now.
can’t / couldn’t (不可能), may not/might not (可能不)可以用来表示否定的推测。例如:
It can’t / couldn’t be Professor Wang. He has gone to America last month.
Could he have finished his thesis?
