Text analysis

It is published by Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press and talking about great European cities, such as Paris, Barcelona, Florence and Athens. 4 cities are typical of their own characteristics, but they also have something in common, especially when it comes to art. There are 4 paragraphs, which is about 300 words. There are some places of interest, which students are not so familiar to. After leaning this lesson, students can know about European culture and broaden their horizons.

Analysis of students

Students are senior 1 high school students from Xingyi No.3 High School. They have learnt English for more than 4 years. They are students of class 2. The students’ average score is 75 (the total score is 120), so they can be able to read the text and finish activities in class when they try to read the text slower and they can get help from the teacher and partners if necessary. They are not familiar to this topic, which can attract their interest. They are curious about

new knowledge and culture.

Teaching methods

I mainly adopt situational teaching approach and multimodal teaching. As we know, the lesson’s topic is Great European Cities. I combine it with another subtitle, My travelling plan to Europe, in order to make our lesson meaningful, clear, active, creative and real. The summer vacation is coming, and students would like to know something about tourism. After knowing my travelling plan and learning these European cities throughout it, they also can design their own travelling plans and invite their foreign friend to come to their hometown because Xingyi is famous and it is worth visiting. The learning process is so natural that they may pay more attention to language learning instead of reading to finish some tasks. In this lesson, I will use Seewo whiteboard, a cellphone, videos, pictures, and so on. It is a trend that teaching is related to technology.

4. Learning objectives

1. Students can be able to read the title and subtitle to summarize the main idea of the text. 2. Students can be able to underline the key words and get the details of the text quickly. 3. Students can be able to infer where the text can be found.

can grasp reading skills including getting main idea, summarizing and inferring.

Teaching procedures

Step 1: Leading in (4minutes) In this step, I will say hello to students firstly. Then I will give my best wishes to them because the final exams are coming. In addition，I will ask them some questions about their travelling plans in the coming summer vacation. The purpose is that these conversations can lead in our topic and attract students’ attention and interest. Step 2: Introducing my travelling plan to students (25minutes) In this step, I will introduce my travelling plan to Europe including 4 destinations,

Barcelona,

Paris,

Florence and Athens respectively. For example, I will set off from Chongqing Airport which is close to my house. At first, I will arrive in Barcelona, Spain. Then I will show some pictures of places of interest there. One video is shown so they can know the city clearly. I also ask students to read the paragraph of this part to finish one

activity. I will repeat the above ways to introduce other cities.

There are 4 activities that students need to finish. The purpose is that students can learn language in the real environment, students can know about European culture, and students can be able to improve their reading skills by underlining the key words to get the details of the text quickly.

Step3: Knowing more (6minutes)

In this step, students have known my travelling plan and read all paragraphs. I will ask them to summarize the main idea of the text and infer where we can find this similar information. Students have to finish 2 activities. The purpose is that students can improve their reading skills, such as summarizing and inferring. They also can learn how to survive by collecting information they need if they are in a foreign country.

Step 4: Designing a travelling plan (8minutes) In this step, I will ask students to do a task in groups. They need to discuss and design their own travelling plans. Then one student of each group will do a report to share their ideas. The purpose is that students can cooperate and apply what they have learnt to their lives and that students can speak more about this topic in English. Step 5: Homework (2minutes)

In this step, I will ask students to write an email within 100 words.

They need to introduce their hometown, Xingyi, and invite the Italian friend Jack to come here and hang out together. This topic is related to contents they have learnt in class. The purpose is that they can use similar sentences of the text to write compositions and improve their writing skills after class.
