Teaching plan for

Background information Analysis of teaching material: The teaching material is taken from a piece of news. It talks about a brave young man – Lin Tao who saved his neighbour without thinking about his own safety. All the students should learn from Lin Tao for his courage, wisdom and kindness. Students will not only learn different reading skills but also the qualities of Lin Tao. Analysis of students: Students in our class have the abilities to preview the spelling and pronunciation of new words before class. So it will only takes little time to read and learn new words. That gives us more time to deal with the text of reading material. Grade 7 students should know how to be careful with fire and try to be brave when someone is in need. This topic is very nice and useful to them. Students are very interested in the news. I hope that according to this, they can get the spirit of Lin Tao if there is fire some day in the future.

Teaching procedures Step I Lead in (about 3 mins) 1.
Watch a short video. Question: How is the boy? (The boy is friendly and brave.) T: Do you know any brave people? Are you a brave student? 【Purpose】
●
The boy in the video is also a student from Secondary school who is brave enough to save a man in need. The video can stimulate student’
pursuit of the spirit of bravery and kindness.
2.
Read the news taken from China Daily about
the brave student. Q:
(1) Where is the news taken from? (China Daily) (2)
What is the title of the news? (A brave boy) (3)
When did the story happen? (On April 24) (4)
What did the boy do? (He helped a sick man and saved his life.) 【Purpose】
●
Familiarize the students with news, a kind of new writing style. Students can get the main idea of the news and also the basic structure of a piece of news. The questions set in this part can help students know better about the news. ●
The news here is about the spirit of bravery which is almost the same as the topic of the reading material, so students can preview the topic of this part and have a basic understanding of the spirit we will learn in this class.
Step II Fast-reading (about 5 mins) 1.
Skimming Question:
1) Where is the text from?(C) A. a magazine
B. a notebook
C. a newspaper 2) What is the title of the news? (What a brave young man!) 【Purpose】
●
The knowledge learned in Lead in can be checked and strengthened in this part. Students can better feel the difference between news and some other texts in which they can get a lot of information from the title which also shows the significance of a title to the news.
2.
Read the picture T:
From the picture, what can you see?(The building was on fire. There was a lot of smoke. Someone was putting out the fire. The fire burnt the man.)
【Purpose】
●
●
To a piece of news, what really matters in not only the text but also the picture. Before reading the news, readers can get much information through the picture. At the first sight of a piece of news, people will first be attracted by the picture. Thus, the ability to get information from the picture is really helpful for their development in the future.
The information gotten from the picture can make students predict the main idea of the news which will help students check whether they have predicted right in the following reading. That’s to say, reading the picture can better attract students’
attention.
T: The title and picture are important for a piece of news. However, the first sentence which is called a lead is also necessary for us to understand the news better. What question can you answer according to the title, picture and the lead?
【Purpose】
●
The title and picture of a news can give us a lot of information. The lead is the generalized idea of a piece of news which will generally tell us the main characters, what happened and when was it happened. The lead actually decides the spirit of a piece of news.
3.
Read and divide T: Read the news quickly. According to the general idea of each part, try to divide it into three parts.
【Purpose】
●
Dividing is the best choice for students to get familiar with the structure and the main idea of the passage. After dividing, students will be able to have a clear understanding of the news and know more about the process of the event.
Step Ⅲ
Careful reading (about 25 mins) T: From part 1, we learn that Lin Tao saved his neighbour from a fire. But do you want to know how he saved his neighbour? Let’s come to part 2. 1.
Part 2 T: Read part 2 by yourself and complete the table.
T: Where was Lin Tao at that moment? (He was at home alone.) What did he hear?
(He heard someone shouting.) What does “someone” mean here?
(Someone refers to Mrs Sun or a stranger.) T: If someone means Mrs Sun, was Mrs Sun dangerous? (Yes.)
If someone was a stranger, he may be a neighbour of Mrs Sun’s, what kind of person he is?
(Kind and helpful) T: What does she or he shout? (Fire! Fire! Help!)
If you are there, try to imitate the shout. T: After hearing the sound, what did Lin Tao see?
(He saw a lot of smoke from next door.)
Where did he run to?
( He ran to Mrs Sun’s house.) T: In her house, he saw the Mrs Sun. Read this part loudly and find the information about Mrs Sun.
T: How old was Mrs Sun?
(79 years old)
So Mrs Sun is too old to move by herself. T: What happened to her? (Her left leg was hurt and could not get out.) T: Where did the fire happen?
(In the kitchen.) Why did the fire happen in the kitchen instead of the bedroom or the bathroom? (Because there is a stove, gas and rubbish bins in the kitchen) T: So the kitchen is a dangerous place, we should be careful with the stove, the gas and the rubbish bin. T: In order to prevent fire, can you give some advice to Mrs Sun? 1)
Do not play with matches. 2)
Be careful with fireworks 3)
Keep your hair away from fire. 4)
Do not put anything hot into the rubbish bin. T: Mrs Sun was in danger. If you were there, what can you do? (We can call 119 for help. We can ask other people for help. We can also run away quickly.) T: Did Lin Tao run away quickly?(No.) T: He rushed into the fire, right?( Yes.) T: Read this part again and find Lin Tao’s actions.
T: At first, what did he do?
(He poured water over his clothes to protect himself.) T: Will you pour water over yourself when there’s a fire?( No.)
So, Lin Tao is quite clever. T: Next, what did he do?
( He rushed into the kitchen.) T: What’s the meaning of “rush”? It means “run slowly” or “run quickly”? (Run quickly.) We know that the kitchen was on fire, right? (Yes.)
Was it dangerous to rush into the kitchen? (Yes.) T: What kind of person Lin Tao was?
(Brave) T: Then, what did he do?
(He put a wet blanket over Mrs Sun and helped her out.)
T: Why did Lin Tao put a wet blanket over Mrs Sun?
(Because she was old, weak and hurt) T: We can see that Lin Tao is really careful.
At last, he helped Mrs Sun out. So he was very helpful. T: Did Lin Tao save Mrs Sun successfully? (Yes)
Why could Lin Tao save Mrs Sun successfully?
(Because he was brave and wise.) T: That’s to say, a real hero should be brave and wise. It means “有勇有谋”
in Chinese. T: Lin Tao did such a good job. Let’s review part 2 together.
(He was at home alone and heard someone shouting “Fire! Fire! Help!”.Then he ran outside and saw a lot of smoke from next door. He went in and found Mrs Sun in the kitchen. He ran to the bathroom and poured water over his clothes. Then he rushed into the kitchen. He put a wet blanket over Mrs Sun and finally helped her out.) T: Lin Tao is so brave. Do you want to be as brave as him? Work in groups of three. A is Lin Tao, B is Mrs Sun and C is the Reader. Try to act it out.
T: If there is a fire, can you protect yourself? Let’s watch a short video and answer a question. How many ways do you find?
(7) 【Purpose】
Different kinds of exercises are set in this part to lead students to obtain certain information from part 2. Completing the table about Lin Tao can create a vivid picture of Lin Tao’s action before he rushed into the fire. Finding information about Mrs Sun can tell us the dangerous situation Mrs Sun was in which increased the difficulties Lin Tao had in saving her out. Filling in blanks about Lin Tao’s actions not only shows how Lin Tao saved Mrs Sun but also tells is that “A real hero should be brave and wise”.
Imitating the shout of “someone”can make students enter the dangerous situation of Mrs Sun and feel the tension and nervousness. Students are quite interested in the activity of imitation. Their interest can make their understanding better and deeper.
The further thinking of “Fire and Kitchen”gives students a great opportunity to talk about the danger in the kitchen. On the one hand, students will clearly know why there is a fire in the kitchen. On the other hand, students can keep in heart
how they can prevent fire in the future.
Actually, kitchen is not the only place which will be on fire. So, preventing the fire is better than putting out the fire. Ways to prevent the fire should be learned and remembered by all the students. As a student, what we can do is quite limited. We should protect ourselves at first because we are not strong enough to save others sometimes. However, we can call 119 and ask other people for help. And at that time, running away doesn’t mean that you are not brave. I think running away quickly means that we know protecting ourselves is the best thing we can do which will not give any burden to other people. Lin Tao saved Mrs Sun successfully. Actually, not everyone can did it successfully because not everyone can be as wise and brave as Lin Tao. So we should learn from Lin Tao’s spirit. Acting out the process will help students better understand the text, remember certain important verbs and cooperate with other students. The vivid performance will attract the interest of all the students. The topic of “fire” has three requirements. First, students should learn that fire is dangerous and we should try our best to prevent the fire.Second, students should know that protecting ourselves is as important as helping others. Third, knowing how to protect ourselves is the most significant point in this part.
2.
Part 3 T: After saving Mrs Sun, Lin Tao was badly hurt. Now he was in hospital. Read part 3 and choose correct answers.
T: How long did Lin Tao stay in hospital? (C.
Two weeks.) T: What did many people give him? (B.
Flowers and C. Presents) T: What did Lin Tao think of fire? (C.
Dangerous) T: Which part of his body did the fire burn?
( A. Neck, B. Arms and C. Face) T: Do you think face is very important to everyone?
(Yes.) T: Lin Tao’s face was burnt which has great influence on his life. But did he regret rushing into the fire and saving Mrs Sun?
(No.) T: Why?
(Because he saved Mrs Sun.) T: Yes. He saved a life which is more important than the face.
What a brave young man! 【Purpose】
The further thinking here tells students something different from protecting themselves. In a fire or in any dangerous situations, life is the most important. Lin Tao sacrificed his face which shows that he was really brave, but also shows that he was clearly aware that Mrs Sun’s life is more important than his face. We should learn and pursue this kind of spirit.
Step III. Post-reading (10 mins) 1.
Pair work T: If you were a reporter, do you want to interview Lin Tao?
(Yes.)
Work in pairs and make an interview.
【Purpose】
Interviews are made when something should be advocated and learned. Interviewing Lin Tao helps students review the whole news, cooperate with his partner and practise his speaking ability.
2.
Group work T: Heroes don’t only exist in history or in news, they also live in daily lives. Do you know some brave heroes? Work in groups of six and talk about them.
Your report should include the following part: a title, a picture and all the aspects of a piece of news, 【Purpose】
In our daily life, everyone can be a hero. Heroes are praised not only because of their actions but also their spirit. Recognizing the spirit of some heroes and using their own ways to advocate the spirit to other people can make people realize that real heroes are around them and they can also be a great hero if they want to be.
Homework 1. Reread the article and underline what puzzles you, e.g. words, phrases or sentences. 2. Prepare to write a story of a real hero and share it with your group members.
【Purpose】
Let students consolidate what they have learnt in class and keep on thinking based on the comprehensive understanding of the whole article to better understand it and meanwhile prepare for the next period.
Board writing
【Purpose】
To show students the structure of the article during the process of reading the article.
After-class Reflection (To be written shortly after the class)
