Period 1. Introduction Function and Speaking

I. Lead—in:

We have studied in Junior High for about one month. The new environment, the new teachers and the new class. Do you work hard? I think most of you work very hard. You often stay at the classroom in the second floor of our teaching building, go to the dining hall and the student apartment building. There are so many buildings in our school. Do you know a new high—rise building will be built behind the dining hall? Maybe it will be a five-storey building like our teaching building.

Then open the book, on P31. Do activity 1. Which words do you use to describe buildings?

II. Read about the homes of the two students. Which one is more similar to yours? Ask the Ss to answer the questions individually. (Three or four students)

Pay attention to the phrases:

1. 只作定语，不可作表语。

an eight-year-old boy (数+名+形)

the 30-kilometer journey (数+名)

a five-storey building (数+名)

III. Write three or four sentences describing your home.

Give the Ss five minutes to work alone. Then work in pairs to compare their answers.

IV. Function and speaking.

Showing position and direction.

A: No. 1, as a model.

Tian’anmen square is in the middle of Beijing.

(Ss do No. 2 to No. 6 by themselves)

B: Work in pairs.

Make up a dialogue asking for direction.

(Such as our neighbourhood, or the same place that both of them know well.)

Such as: If you are at our school gate, how can you get to the school shop/ the post office?

V. Homework:

Finish the little quiz about Introduction.

Period 3 Grammar 1, 2 and Writing

I. Grammar 1, Present perfect tense 1

Ask the students to answer the questions in activity 1,P34

现在完成时的用法之一：过去发生的动作对现在造成的影响。人们使用现在完成时并不关心动作和事发生，只关心这个动作和现在有无联系或对现在产生的影响。

现在完成时的用法之二：到现在为止的这一时期中发生的情况，多用up to now, so far, till now, recently, these days, this summer, this morning 等时间壮语连用。

IV. Dealing with activity 2&3 (P36)

V. Writing.

Look at the way the words “and” and “but” are used in this sentence from A lively City. I live from the students the difference in meaning between the two words. (“And” indicates additional information is being given, while “but” indicates that the information which allows is going to modify the previous statement in some way.)

Have the Ss complete the paragraph with “and” and “but”. Then check the answers.
