Unit7 How much are these socks?
Period 3 (Grammar Focus—3c)
Lesson Type: Grammar I. Teaching material analysis:
This unit is mainly designed to help students learn to ask about prices. In this unit, students can get the expressions of various kinds of clothes and many adjectives that can modify different clothes appropriately. Also, students’
communicative language ability can be consolidated in the process of asking about prices and expressing what they want to buy. All in all, the topic of this unit is close to students’ life and it is very practical when we go shopping.
This class helps students summarize and generalize the target sentence structures in unit7——ask and answer about the prices of singular countable nouns and plural countable nouns. II. Teaching goals:
1. Knowledge objectives:
a. Review the words about clothes and color;
b. Consolidate the key sentence structures in this unit by speaking and writing.
c. Summarize and generalize the target sentence structures of asking about prices.
--- How much is the/ this/ that…?
--- It’s…
---How much are the/ these/ those…?
---They’re…
2. Ability objectives:
a. Students can talk about the prices of clothes, fruits, vegetables and school things by using the “How much…?” sentence structure.
b. Students can use the definite article (the) and the demonstrative pronouns (this, that these and those) properly.
c. Students can use the adjectives, such as long, short, big, small, red, yellow and blue to modify the things they want to buy.
d. Students’
abilities of listening, speaking, reading and writing are trained and
improved by using the target language in this unit.
3. Moral objectives:
(1) In the process of asking about prices and talking about clothing, students can know how to buy things in their daily life, and they can feel the fun of learning English.
(2) After learning this unit, students are supposed to develop a positive and rational attitude toward consuming. Students are expected to realize that we can buy things we need, not we want. III. Teaching key and difficult points:
1. Teaching key points:
a. Summarize the key sentence structures of talking about prices.
b. Students can make conversations in different language situations.
2. Teaching difficult points:
Students are able to apply the key sentence structures accurately and flexibly in various language situations. V. Core competence of English subject:
Help students to develop the abilities of forming a meaningful conversation with the shop assistants when they are shopping by speaking practice. VI. Teaching procedures: 1. Step one: Lead-in a. Show students a picture of the clothes in my shopping cart in Taobao. b. Ask students “What are these?” and “How much are they?” , then list the things and the prices of them on the screen. c. Encourage students to look at the clothes carefully and pay attention to the color, size and price of each one.
For example, show a picture of a white T-shirt, and ask “What’s this?”
Students answer “It’s a white T-shirt.”
The teacher asks “How much is the white T-shirt?”
Students answer “It’s 5 dollars.”
d. Encourage students to answer the questions and show the structures of asking about prices.
---How much is the/ this/ that…? ---It’s…
---How much are the/ these/ those…? ---They’re…
2. Step two: Summarize the sentences in Grammar Focus Lead students to classify the sentences in Grammar Focus into two kinds, one is about asking the prices of singular countable nouns; the other is about asking the prices of plural countable nouns. How much is the hat? How much is this T-shirt? How much is that brown sweater? How much are these socks? How much are those black trousers?
It’s five dollars. It’s seven dollars. It’s eight dollars. They’re two dollars. They’re nine dollars. (The first three pairs of sentences are about the singular countable nouns; the last two pairs are about plural countable nouns.) 3. Step three: Pair work a. Show some pictures of the school things (like pencils, erasers, schoolbag and so on.) and help students make sentences like How much is/are…? It’s/They’re…
b. Exercise—Fill in the blanks about asking the prices of things. 4. Step four: Group work (Role-play) a. Show a picture of an apple tree, and there are three apples in the tree. Each apple represents a store (a clothes store, a fruit store and a vegetable store). The class is divided into three groups, Group A, Group B and Group C. Each group chooses one apple as their store. For example, Group A—Clothes store; Group B—Fruit store; Group C—Vegetable store. b. Each group is supposed to make a conversation which happens in the store, and every group member should have his/her own words. c. Students are required to use the target language structures in this unit. d. Walk around the classroom and provide students with necessary help.
e. Encourage each group to share their conversation in class. Meanwhile, the other students should grade the performances according to the Evaluation List the teacher shows on the screen. 5. Step five: Write an ad. a. Students are expected to write an ad for their stores. The teacher shows an example on the screen—an ad for a clothes store. b. This writing practice can be students’ homework if there is no time to write in class. 6. Step six: Summary a. Show a picture of the students themselves, and the picture shows they were selling and buying things in the Flea Market several days ago b. Ask “What things do you want to buy?”, “Who gives you the money to buy the things you want?” and “How can you make full use of the money? c. Students think about the three questions and one or two are invited to share their answers. d. The teacher summarizes: It’s not easy for our parents to make money, and we should use the money from the parents wisely and reasonably. What we can buy is the things we need, not we want or we like. e. Ask, “What have we learnt this class?” Help students summarize by themselves. 7. Step seven: Homework a. Review and remember the key sentence structures about asking and answer about prices. b. Continue to complete the ad for your store.
