Teaching Aims: 1. Help students improve their reading skills through reading a speech. 2. Help students learn something about the Olympic Games and some great athletes. 3. Help students build a positive attitude towards life and encourage them to hold on to their dreams. Teaching methods: 1. Task-based teaching and learning. 2. Cooperative learning. 3. Discussion. Teaching important points: 1. To get the students to know basic knowledge about the Olympic Games. 2. To get the students to learn about some great athletes. 3. To get the students to learn different reading skills. Teaching difficult points:

To develop the students' reading ability through different tasks. Teaching procedure: Step 1. Lead-in

1. Ask the Ss the following questions: 1). Do you love sports? 2). When talking about sports events, what comes to your mind? 2. Show the Ss a short video of different sports, and ask them to name the sports they see in it. (Judo, golf, beach volleyball, swimming, tennis, fencing, gymnastics, horsemanship, rowing, road cycling, football, marathon) 3. Asks Ss to summarize the benefits of sports by asking the question: Why is sport so popular? Sports play a significant role in our life.

It builds our body; It relaxes our mind; It helps us c_________ when working; (concentrate) We can make friends and c_______ with others; (compete) We can c_________ ourselves as well. (challenge)

Step 2. Reading 1. Quiz: How much do you know about the Olympics?

Ask the Ss to answer the questions as quickly as possible. 2. Reading strategy: 1) What is a speech? A speech is a formal talk that a person gives to an audience. 2) How to make a good speech? Tell an interesting story. Use quotations. Present statistics. Ask questions. 3. Fast-reading Ask the Ss to read the passage quickly and answer the following questions: 1) What is the speech about? It is about the history and significance of the Olympics. 2) What does the speaker wish at the end of the speech? He wishes the Olympic Movements a successful future to match its past glory. 4. Careful-reading

Ask the Ss to read the passage again, divide the passage into four parts, and match the main idea with each part. Part 1 (Para. 1): the introduction of the speech Part 2 (Para 2-4): the history and significance of the Olympic Games Part 3 (Para 5-8): some sports stars and their contributions. Part 4 (Para 9-10): the closure of the speech 5. Detailed-reading 1) Ask the Ss to read Paragraph 2~4 and find out the differences between the

ancient and the contemporary Olympic Games.

2) Ask Ss to read Paragraphs 5~8 and find out the information of the athletes.

Step 3. Discussion 1. What qualities do you think these athletes have in common? They work very hard to achieve their aims. They have passion and love for both sports and their countries. They are not satisfied with the present and they struggle for better. 2. What moral lessons can we learn from the Olympic Games?

Where there is a will, there is a way. Nothing is difficult, if you put your heart into it. No pains, no gains. Step 4. Homework Find out more about the Olympic Games, or athletes that you like or admire.
