Newspaper Reading Teaching Plan

Learning aims and teaching objectives: By the end of the lesson, the students are expected to

a)get familiar with the columns of a newspaper. b)understand the functions of the titles in a newspaper. c) appreciate the expressions and the punctuations used in the article. d) know how to read newspapers and what they read English newspapers for.

Focus of the lesson and predicted area of difficulty:

a) To give their own comments of an event, a film or a social phenomenon

b) To tell the use of punctuations in a newspaper article

highlighter Teaching procedures: Step 1 Lead-in 1.Ask the students the following questions :

1) Do you know that the USA voted for a new president last year? Who is he? 2) Do you know recently, a 6-year-old boy in Yangzhou went missing? The police looked for him everywhere but his own mother tuned out to be the murderer. 3) Everyday there is something, big or small, going on around us or around the world. Where can you get the news？

Step 2 Structures of a newspaper Ask the students to take out 21st Century Teens Juniors and have an answer race.

1.Can you tell me how many columns there are in Teens Juniors? What are they? 2.Where can you find these columns? 3. Please look at each column, and tell us what is in each column? 5.What is your favourite column? 6. How do you choose the article you like to read in each column? （设计意图：梳理本节课所用报纸的结构，以便学生能更好更快地找出自己所喜欢的栏目和文章。）

Step 3 Function of the titles in the newspaper Encourage the students to go through all the titles and try to answer the questions below: 1. Is there anything special about the titles? (Robot’s tough test, Live in another body, Comic Con with a twist Learning the system) 2.Why are phrases commonly used in the newspaper? 3. Read these titles. What is special about them? ( The world is going crazy for the sentences, App help people choose food they need) 4.Why are present tenses commonly used in the title?

5. What’s special about this title? (Is it fair to make movie-goers buy 3-D glasses?) 6.What’s t the function of this title?

Step 4 Guided reading—A film Review Pre-reading Before reading the article, raise the following questions : 1.Why do you choose the article about a film? 2. Look at the picture on the front page of the newspaper. What can you see on the picture? 3. At the first sight of the picture, what do you think the film is about? 4.What is the light between them ?Can you guess？

（设计意图：通过讨论报纸首页的电影图片，预测图片中的人物关系和情节，激发学生的阅读兴趣，让学生带着期待和想象开启报刊文章的阅读之旅。) While-reading Get the students to read and answer the following questions：

1.Who are the main characters?

2.Where do they live? What happened to them? 3.When do they usually switch? 4.What is the result?

(设计意图：从新闻五大要素入手，设置Wh问题，引导学生快速读取文章信息---理清电影中的时间，地点，人物关系以及事件的起因经过和结果。为下文观点陈述铺平道路。）

Ask the students to read Paragraph 3 and think about the following questions:

1.Who is the director of the story?

2. What does he say about the story?

3.Why does he say so? 4.What does he say in detail? Encourage the students to read the last paragraph and tell what the writer thinks of the film. 1. Read again and find the old things in the last paragraph. 2.What do all the old things mean?

Show pictures to explain the new words. 2.How are they described in the article? 3. Ask the students to underline words and phrases that stop them from understanding the

article.

（设计意图：引导学生在读报过程中养成积累词汇，摘录好词好句的习惯。英语报刊体裁多样、贴近现实生活、词语丰富、趣味性强，英文报刊阅读既可拓展学生的知识面，又增加了初中生接触地道、纯正英语的机会, 有助于扩充学生的词汇量，习得地道表达。）

Ask the students to read the last paragraph and answer the questions below. 1.Who said it? 2.What punctuation is used in the paragraph? 3.What is the function of the quotation marks? 4. Discussion: What are the functions of quotations? Give more examples to check if the students can identify different usages of quotations.

Step 6 Conclusion

Tell the students that reading newspapers really benefits us a lot. Reading English newspapers can not only keep us informed but also improve our English. Reading makes a full man. （设计意图：总结阅读英文报刊的好处，希望学生养成阅读英文书籍及报刊的习惯。）
