厦门一中

李祉缇

Teaching objectives 1. Students are able to develop a positive attitude towards working in groups, given the opportunity to work in groups, 2. Students are able to find out the attitude of main characters(Jane Eyre, Mr. Reed. Mr Brocklehurst. Dr Lloyd. Bessie) in Chapter 2 in Jane Eyre by working in groups. 3. Students are able to have a better understanding of the social background in the 19th

century England with the help of six thinking hats (white, red, green, blue, black and yellow)for critical thinking. Teaching procedures: Step I

Lead-in

1.Review the family background of Mrs Reed and their characteristic. John Reed—rude, cruel, violent Eliza Reed—selfish Mrs.Reed—stubborn, mean, cruel Bessie—scold Jane, speak ill of Jane 2.Work in pairs and retell Chapter I according to the key words and pictures given. window-seat----John----bullied--threw the book at Jane---cut---fought back---shocked---locked Step II Main characters

1.Figure out the new main characters. (white hat, fact) Scene 1

T:After Jane was locked in the red room, she was ill and a new character was introduced. Who was he and what was he? Ss: He was Dr. Llord and he was a doctor. T: Correct, but he is a doctor for whom? Do you think Mrs. Reed herself would send for him? Ss: He was a doctor for Servant. T: Quote: It was also a great relief to recognize Dr Lloyd, who Mrs. Reed called in for her servants.(she always called a specialist for herself and the children.) Scene 2 Then Mrs Reed called Jane to the breakfast room, and Mr. Brocklehurst was there too. 2. Analyze how the main characters feel about each other.(red hat, feelings)

T: After Jane was ill, what was doctor Lloyd’s attitude towards her, please find some evidence to support your idea. Bessie also changed her attitude, what did she do?

Ss: Doctor Lloyd was kind and considerate…

Quote: He looked after Jane kindly.

The doctor lifted me carefully.

Jane felt it was a relief to recognize Dr Lloyd. He gave Bessie orders to take care of her. He decided to help Jane go to school. Bessie: She tried to comfort Jane. She slept in Jane’s room to look after her. She tempted Jane with food and books. 3. Pay attention to some descriptions of Mr. Brocklehurst’s appearance.

A black column; cold; stony face; be dressed in black T: According to his appearance, what kind of person do you think Mr. Brocklehurst was? Ss: He might be serious, indifferent….

Step III. Imagination—missing information(green hat,creativity)

Mrs. Reed smacked(掌掴) Jane’s face but left without a word. If you were Mrs. Reed, what would you say to Jane? Work in pairs, write a short dialogue between Jane and Mrs. Reed and role play the conversation. Sample: A. Mrs. Reed

B. Jane Jane: My uncle Reed is now in heaven, and can see all you think and do, and so can my parents. They know how you hate me, and are cruel to me…(you can add some more ) Mrs Reed: ... Step IV. Social background:

Any story only makes senses under certain social background. As we’ve found out, Dr Lloyd and Bessie were kind to Jane while Mr. Brocklehurst and Mr. Reed were not very friendly to her. Apart from their personalities, what do you think would be the reason according to the social background. Now I have several questions to help you. Will Mrs. Reed send for Dr. Lloyd for herself? Why did Mrs. Reed regard Jane as an ungrateful child? Why did Bessie say that Jane was less than a servant, because she didn’t work?

Why did Bessie say John was Jane’s young master?

Why did Mr. Brocklehurst talk with Mrs. Reed in an respectful manner but not to Jane? Work in groups and have a discussion:

A: provide ideas B: provde ideas

C: take notes D: report

Platform

T: Brilliant, because of their different social background, Jane always feel inferior to people around her and it will be an important factor throughout the whole novel. Step V. Review the whole process again.(blue hat, process) Chapter I—Characters—family background Chapter II—Conflicts—leaving Gateshead

Chapter III- Solutions—going to Lowood school

Step VI

Assessment:

If you can well understand why the story happened under the social background, please hands up. If you know something about it, please hands up. If you have no idea about why it happened, please hands up. Step VII

Homework:

1. What kind of life will Jane lead in the school after what Mrs. Reed told Mr. Brocklehurst?(teachers, students…)

2.Practice dubbing for the video clip in groups of three.
