Step1 Greetings & Lead-in

1. Greet the whole class.

2. Make use of a short dialogue to tell the Ss what direct speech and reported or

indirect speech are.

(1) T:

What did you eat this morning?

S1: I ate …

T:

What did Tom say, Jack?

S2: He said he ate …

(2) She said, “They are using PSAs to educate people.”

She said that they were using PSAs to educate people.

Step2 Changes from direct speech into reported speech

1. Tenses:

主句谓语动词为过去式的情况下，直接引语转为间接引语时时态的变化如下：

注意：

(1) 直接引语如果讲述的是客观事实或真理，变为间接引语时时态不变。

(2) 直接引语的谓语动词如果有“must+动词原形”构成，变为间接引语时不变。

直接引语变为间接引语时人称代词的变化通常是第一、第二人称代词变为第三人称代词，但要视具体情况而定。

Step4 indirect speech in questions & imperative sentences 1. 若直接引语为一般疑问句（即倒装语序），改为间接引语时要用if/ whether 引导的宾语从句。

e.g. She asked me, “Can you swim?”

→

She asked me if /whether I could swim. 2. 若直接引语为特殊疑问句，间接引语要变为相应的疑问词引导的宾语从句。

e.g. He asked me ,”When did you go to the city?”

→

He asked me when I went to the city. He asked us, “What are you doing now?”

→

He asked us what we were doing then. 3. 若直接引语是选择疑问句，变成间接引语时应用whether…or。

e.g. “Do you like rice or noodles?” Marry asked me.

→

Marry asked me whether I liked rice or noodles. 4. 若直接引语为祈使句，间接引语要改为下面的句型：

tell sb. (not) to do sth.; ask sb. (not) to do sth,; order sb. (not) to do sth. Step5 Consolidation
