At the end of the class, students will be able to : 1)

Know what derivation is and what kind of location it is in the whole system of word-formation. 2)

Enable Ss to learn the specific rules about prefixes and suffixes. For example, what kind of prefixes stand for a certain meaning. 3)

Build Ss’ confidence in learning English by offering a new way of memorizing words-derivation. Teaching important points: How to summarize the knowledge and draw a mind map. Teaching difficult points: How to explore and memorize the different meanings or parts of sppeech each prefix and suffix stands for. Teaching procedures: Teaching procedures Lead-in

Review the compand words by guessing the words’

meanings.

Introduce what is called the prefix by dividing a word into 2 parts. 2.

Introduce what is called the suffix by dividing a word into 2 parts. 3.

Give the definition and location of derivation. 4.

Discuss and explore the rules of prefixes and suffixes, and get the conclusion that generally prefixes change the meanings of a word; while suffixes change the part of speech of a word.

Write down words about “幸运”

as many as possible to prove that derivation can enlarge their vocabulary. 2.

Fill in the blanks with the right forms of the words to see that dervation can help Ss do the grammatical filling test better. 3.

Read the passage and translate the meanings of underlined words to prove that derivation can help Ss understand the passage deeper.

Commnication is the only goal for every language. Conclusion and summary

As long as a method is beneficial to reach our goal, we can be brave to use it. As a good way of memorizing words, derivation will be helpful for us to communicate.

Summarize the knowledge of derivation and ask Ss to draw a mind map by themselves.
