21-22 22-23 Step II

Introduction Ask students to work in pairs and talk about the American School System (K-12)and the Chinese School System. Then deal with Ex 3 on P15. T: Please work in pairs and compare the American School System (K-12)

and the Chinese School System and answer the questions in Ex 1. Suggested answers to Ex 1: 1.1. At the age of 14 or 15. 1.2. 13-14. 1.3. 4 years. 1.4. 15 or 16. 1.5. Senior year. A few minutes later, deal with Ex 3. T: Please look at the pictures and talk about American senior high school life. After checking the answers, go on with reading and vocabulary. Suggested answers to Ex 3: 3.1. Yes, they are. 3.2. In the US we have a school dance in our final year at school. Girls wear beautiful dresses and boys wear dinner jackets. We eat and dance. We have great fun at the prom. We elect prom queen at the end of the prom. (In China we have a party in our final year at school. We are asked to wear school uniforms because that is the last moment we are at school. Some students give a talk, some sing songs, some dance. We enjoy ourselves at the party. Everyone is relaxed after the national matriculation test. At the end of the party, we will end up with the song “We will get together in twenty years”.) 3.3. I think prom night is after the final senior year exams.

3.4. Students receive their high school diploma at the end of their senior year.

Step II

Reading Deal with the reading part.

Scanning Ask students to scan the text and try to guess the meaning of the word highlight and answer the questions in Ex 1 on Page 16. T: After we learned something about the American High school life, now let’s read an article written by an American high school student. Now look at the title please, Highlights of My Senior School Year. Please try to guess the meaning of the word highlight. I think you can get its meaning after you finish reading the text.

Three minutes later, ask students to speak out the meaning of the word highlight. T: Now time is up. Have you got the meaning of the word highlight? S1: I think it means

“wonderful things or best things”. From the text, we can learn Joanna is writing down the wonderful things that happened during her senior school year.

T: Quite correct. Now please read the text quickly and find out the wonderful things in her senior school life. Careful reading Ask students to read the text carefully and find out her successes in her senior school year. Five minutes later, ask students to work in groups and deal with Ex 1 on Page 16. After their discussion, check the answers with the whole class. Show the suggested answers on the PowerPoint. Suggested answers to Ex 1: 1.1. Working as an arts editor for the school newspaper Working as a peer mediator Winning their races on a short school skiing trip to Rocket Mountains Getting good grades on her final exams Receiving the senior prize for English Literature

Given a car by her parents Being elected to the student council Being elected prom queen Watching the sunrise over the sea 1.2. Daniel, her dreamed boy invited her to the prom. They danced most of the dances together. She had a wonderful time. She looked very elegant and was elected prom queen. So she enjoyed it very much.

Step III

Vocabulary Ask students to do vocabulary exercises in the reading. Do Ex 2 and Ex 3 individually. Then check the answers with the whole class.

Step IV

Explanation During this procedure, Teacher will play the tape for students. Students will underline the difficult sentences. After listening to the tape, Teacher will explain the text and deal with language problems.

T:

Now we will deal with some difficult language focuses. Now I will play the tape for you .Please make a mark where you have difficulties. After listening to the tape, explain the difficult sentences to students. Before explaining the difficult points, students are asked to refer to the notes to the text.

T:

Do you have any difficulties with the text?

S1: Could you please explain the sentence to us:I’ve been skiing quite a few times, but never with the school, and since two good friends came on the trip, we had great fun racing each other down the ski lopes. T: Here “quite a few times” means “many times”. From this sentence we can learn that Joanna loves skiing, but that was the first time she went to ski with the school. She and her friends had a very good time when racing the ski slopes. Do you have any other question? Ss: No.

Step V

Discussion Deal with Ex 4 on Page 17. Ask students to work in groups and discuss the questions in Ex 4. Five minutes later, ask some students to present the discussion. Sample of the discussion: 4.1. The following things surprise me very much. Joanna was given a car by her parents and the prom. These are impossible here. A car is very expensive. In my opinion many Chinese parents may give a high school student a bicycle as a gift, but not a car. In our school, students may have a party, never a prom. 4.2. She is an excellent student. She is not only a top student but also active in school activities. 4.3. Yes, I like her very much. I admire her very much. I wish I were her. I wish I could do as well as her.

Step VI

Speaking

Ask students to imagine that it is twenty years from now. They will work in pairs and talk about the highlights of their senior year. Several minutes later, ask some students to act it out.

Step I

Revision Check the homework. T:

Good morning / afternoon, class! Ss: Good morning / afternoon, Mr. /Ms…

T: What did we learn yesterday? Ss: Joanna’s senior school life. T: Is hers the same as yours? S1: Quite different. The senior school life in China is the most important in High school. Students have to devote themselves to preparing for the national matriculation test. S2: Parents and teachers always urge them to devote every minute to their studies.

S4: Life is boring and strained. S5: I admire the American high school students very much. Their life is colorful.

…

T: It is quite true. But please don’t complain a lot. I think the reason why the competition is so fierce is that the population is so big and the education resources are not enough. But the government has been trying to improve and reform the education system. The situation is becoming better and better.

Step II

We can have a clear image of the club. Now let’s discuss the questions in Ex 2 to compare your school clubs with the American ones .Five minutes later I will ask some of you to present your discussion. Possible answers: 2.1. Yes, we have Concert Band, Drama Club, Running Club, Debate Club, Photography Club, Basketball Club, Ping-pang Club, Rope skipping Club, Biology Club and Robot Club. 2.2. am interested in serious discussion.

Step III

Reading and Vocabulary (3) Learn more about American after-school activities. T: OK, there are so many clubs in American high schools. Why do you think there are so many clubs? S1: To make students’ life colorful. S2: To learn some skills. …

T:

Ok, perhaps these are some of the reasons. I think you will learn the most important reason in the article “After-school Activities” on Page 23. First scan the text quickly and find what after-activities are. Scanning Students are asked to scan the text and find the answer to the question: what are after-activities? One minute later, check the answer with the whole class. Careful reading Ask students to read the text carefully and then answer the questions in Ex 1 on Page 23. T: Please read the text carefully and then do Ex 1 on Page 23. Five minutes later we will check the answers. Show the suggested answers on the PowerPoint. 1.1 After-school activities are activities that take place outside classroom lessons, for examples different clubs in schools. 1.2. Because after-class activities can help students to develop their social skills. In American the development of social skills is considered as important as the development of intellectual skills. 1.3. This is because, for many American parents, it is important that their children particularly boys, learn how to compete successfully. Competitive sports will teach people to have the “winning spirit.”

1.4. In summer camps teenagers can take part in many different kinds of outdoor activities, for example, horse riding and water skiing. Discussion Ask students to work in groups and discuss the questions in Ex 2 on Page 23. After their discussion, show the suggested answers on the PowerPoint. Suggested answers to Ex 2: 2.1. Because we are not alone, we are living in a society, which means the totality of social relationships among human beings. It is very important to have the ability to get along well with others.

2.2. Algebra, geometry, botany, science, literature and so on. 2.3. I’d like to go backpacking in the mountains. 2.4. Because these activities take place outside classroom lessons. 2.5. Yes, we need. Towing equipment includes tow boats or cable. Careful Reading Ask students to read the text carefully and then complete the sentences in Ex 3 on Page 23. Five minutes later check the answers with the whole class. Show the suggested answers

on the PowerPoint. 3.1. What employers and colleges look for are students who have skills in several areas. 3.2. Getting on with other students is considered to be a social skill. 3.3 Football and basketball are examples of competitive sports. 3.4. For some parents, academic success is not as important as high school sports. 3.5. In the summer camps, children can take part in many different kinds of outdoor activities, for example horse riding and water skiing. 3.6. Younger children go to summer camps, but most older children do summer jobs or go camping with a group of friends. 3.7. Backpacking in the mountains of the west is very popular. Explanation During this procedure, Teacher will play the tape for students. Students will underline the difficult sentences. After listening to the tape, Teacher will explain the text and

deal with language problems.

T:

Now we will deal with some difficult language focuses. Now I will play the tape for you. Please make a mark where you have difficulties. After listening to the tape, explain the difficult sentences to students. Before explaining the difficult points, students are asked to refer to the notes to the text.

T: Do you have any difficulties with the text?

S1: Could you please explain the sentence to us: For some students and their parents, high school sport is considered more important than academic achievements. T: We can understand it like this: In America, the development of social skills is considered as important as the development of intellectual skills. Many American parents think it is important that their children, particularly boys, learn how to compete successfully. Sports teach one to have the “winning spirit”, which cannot be learned in class. That’s why some students and their parents think high school sport is more important. Do you have any other questions? Ss: No.

Step IV

Function

By doing exercises on Page 22 students will learn to express thoughts and feelings. First, ask students to listen and pay attention to the sentences which are used to express thoughts and feelings. Then they will be asked to express their opinions about the students clubs. Sample of thought and opinions: S1: It seems to me that they have too many clubs. I wonder how they can find time for their homework. S2: In my opinion, it is good there are so many clubs for students to choose, for everyone has his own hobbies and taste. S3: I find it strange the school have Fashion Club. In our school, we are not allowed to follow fashion. We are asked to wear school uniform at school and concentrate on our studies. Talking about fashion is forbidden here. S4: In my view, there is something in common. Both in China and the US there are

Drama Club, Debating Club, Nature Club, C.A..R.E and some sports clubs.

Step V

Everyday English Ask students to complete the conversations with the phrases and expressions in the box. They will do the exercise first individually; later three students make up a group and read the conversation. If there is enough time, ask students to have a similar conversation and present it to the class.

Step VI

Teaching procedures & ways教学过程与方式

Step I

Revision Ask students to look at the following sentences and tell the function of the clauses. Show the following sentences on the PowerPoint. Subject

Verb

Object I

reminded

him that he had an appointment today. I

wonder

when Mark will get there. I

am not sure

whether he’s coming. T:

From the above sentences, we can learn clauses can function as an object. Today we are going to learn other functions that clauses perform in sentences.

Step II

Grammar Deal with Grammar exercises. The

predicative

clause

Show the following on the PowerPoint. My feeling is (that)

they’re going to be big one day.

I feel that they’re going to be big one day. My belief is (that) he’s got a healthy problem. My opinion is (that) it’s getting better and better. My idea is (that) we ask one or two of them to write about their experiences. Help students to get the conclusion that the underlined phrases are a way of emphasizing that something is our belief and opinion. The above clauses work as a predicative. These clauses are called predicative

clauses. Deal with the Predicative clause exercises in Ex 2

on Page 18. The subject clause Explain what a subject clause is. Show the following sentences on the PowerPoint. Thomas made her angry.

That he had even asked her made her angry. T: Please look at the two sentences. In the first sentence “Thomas” is a proper noun, functioning as the subject of this sentence. In the second the clause “that he had even asked her” is the subject of this sentence. So it is called a subject clause. Now let’s rewrite the sentences in Ex 3 on Page 18, using subject clauses. Suggested answers: 3.1. What we need is some interesting news. 3.2. What people want are pictures on the page. 3.3. What the teacher told me is the truth. Deal with the other exercises. T: Please look at this sentence: It’s unbelievable that my school life is over. In this sentence the pronoun “it” functions as a formal subject, while the underlined part is the real subject. The pattern “It is/was … + adj. ...” is very useful. And sometimes, we can use a noun or a v-ed form. So the pattern should be “It is/was … + adj. / n / v-ed…”. Please look at the following sentences from this unit and pay attention to the sentence structures. Highlight the pattern

It is …

+ adj. / n / v-ed ... in the following sentences. 1.1 It’s strange that I’m leaving school so soon. 1.2. It’s useful that we learn how to write articles for a newspaper. 1.3. It’s a pity that I didn’t take part in the summer camp. 1.4. It is said that

in the newspaper that the Japanese Minister will arrive next Monday.

After explaining the useful pattern, go on with Ex 2-4 on Page 21. Make sure all students can use this useful pattern freely.

Step III

Practice

Deal with grammar Ex 2 on Page 18. Students should do the exercises individually first, then they will discuss why they choose the sentence form. Check the answers with the whole class. Deal with the grammar Ex 4-6 on Page 18 in the same way.

Step IV

Discussion Subordinators which are used in noun clauses: that

what

who

whoever

whatever

whenever whether

which

where

when

how

why

wherever if

how much

how many

how long

how far

how often

whose

Remember to preserve word order in noun clauses:

I don’t know who he is.

Whoever she is is not important.

Whatever is in the box is a mystery.

Can you tell me what he is doing?

She doesn’t understand why he is leaving.

I wonder how much that costs.

Do you know how long it will take?

Step V

Workbook Deal with the grammar exercises on workbook. Deal with Ex 1 and Ex 3 on Page 97 in groups. Teacher may suggest students remember some of the patterns. Ask six students to rewrite the sentences in Ex 2 on the blackboard and then check the answers with the whole class.

Step VI

Homework Go over the grammar in this module. Sum up the phrases expressing thoughts and opinions.

writer. Write sentences describing what was similar and what was different. Five minutes later, exchange their information with other groups. Then they will be asked to write some suggestions on how to make school days more enjoyable. T: OK, some of you have happy memories while some students are not so lucky. Now please work together and make suggestions on how to make your schooldays more enjoyable. Suggested answers to Ex 7: My first day at school My parents sent me to the school. They carried my suitcase to my dormitory where I would sleep with five other girls/boys. The bedding was the same except for the number. I was very excited because everything was new and different from home. I was very happy. Some suggestions on how to make school days more enjoyable I think our school should have more after-school activities so that we students will be kept busy outside class. We should have more sports clubs so that we can learn some social skills, for example, competing skills or competing spirit. In my opinion, we should be given less homework to do. I suggest we should have a music club. We will learn music and talk about music. We can also organize concerts. I think it a good idea to have a drama club in our school. The school play will make our life colorful.

Step III

Speaking

Ask students to work in groups and talk about American high school life. Discuss what they have learnt about American high school life and what they like or dislike about American high school life. Decide aspects of American high school life that are unusual to them. Possible answers to Ex 1 on Page 24 in SPEAKING: 1.1.

I have learned something about the American Secondary School System. Middle School is from Grade 6 to Grade 8. Senior High School is from Grade 9 to Grade

12. Sports are an important part of American high school life. The senior prom is so important in their high school life that both students and their parents value it very much. Some students begin to prepare for it from the beginning of their high school. They have so many senior high clubs. They have a large number of after-school activities. They may have a lot of fun at school. They think it very important to develop social skills. Older teenagers take summer jobs to make money. 1.2. I think it is good to spend some time on sports, while I don’t think sports are more important than academic achievements.

How I wish we could have a senior prom. But I don’t want to spend much time or money on it.

It is good that the development of social skills is considered as important as the development of intellectual skills. What we learn in school should prepare us for what we are going to do in society.

Sample discussion of Ex 2 on Page 24: S1: I think the senior prom is very good. It is the turning point of teenagers.

S2: I like the fact that the senior prom is a very important event in their high school life. But it worries me that they spend so much time and money on it.

S3: I think it is a very good tradition. Maybe we can bring in this custom. After the exams are finished, we may have such a prom to mark that our high school days are over and we’ll walk out of the school gates forever. Whenever we look back at our high school days, we will think about the wonderful things besides our academic achievements. S4: It seems strange to me that American high schools have so many different clubs, which make schools similar to the real adult world. That’s why American high school students have very better social skills than the Chinese peers. S5: It worries me that schools offer a large number of after-school activities, which take place outside classroom lessons. How can American high school students

find enough time to do their lessons? S6: I like after-school activities very much. By taking part in these activities, students show their special talents, their ability to lead, and their ability to get on with others. S7: I admire American children very much because they usually spend several weeks at summer camps. I think it a good idea that older teenagers get summer jobs and make money. I don’t think it a good idea that we have to do our lessons during the long summer holidays.

Step IV

Writing After the discussion of the American high school life, ask students to imagine their ideal senior high school life. After talking about the ideal senior high school life, students will be required to write an article for a student newspaper to describe it. They should refer to the directions on Page 24.

Leading in Play a short video for students to watch and then ask students how much they know about cheerleading. T: Ok, I’d like you to say something about cheerleading.

S1: The cheerleading squad is made up of pretty girls. S2: People are amused by cheerleading. Sometimes it looks very funny.

S3: The cheerleaders dance and do gymnastics before and during competitive games. ……

Step II

Cultural corner T: Now let’s read the article on Page 27. From it you will learn more about the American art of cheering leading. After you read the passage please answer the questions on Page 27. Five minutes later, check the answers with the whole class. Suggested answers: 1.

Yes, it is. Universities offer courses in cheerleading. A lot of training is needed to do the dance and gym routine. Cheerleading competitions are an important part in school and college life for many squads, and cheerleading is a very serious activity.

Cheerleading squads can be found at most athletic events. 2.

Our school does offer dance and gymnastics courses, but they don’t play an important part in our education.

Step III

Reading (Workbook) Deal with Reading on Page 99. T: Do you remember what is Joanna’s highlight of the senior year? Ss: The senior prom. T: What is a “prom”? Ok, you can get the answer from the passage on Page 99. Read the text

quickly and match the headings with the paragraphs. After checking the answers, ask students to read the passage again and do Ex 7&8 on Page 100. Suggested answers: 7.1. “Prom” comes from the verb” to promenade”, which means “to walk around, beautifully dressed, in order to attract attention”. 7.2. It marks the end of life as a child, and the beginning of life as an adult. 7.3. In Canada, the event is called a “formal”. In Britain and Australia, the old fashioned word “dance” is more and more frequently being referred to as a “prom”, and for final school year students in all these countries, this event is the highlight of the school year, just as it is in the USA. 7.4. Some students sell the student newspapers to raise money and taking a part-time job at the weekend is another way. 7.5. There is the problem of what to wear, who to take as the partner, who will be voted “prom queen”, etc. 7.6. What many parents find difficult is the realization that their children’s schooldays are almost over. 7.7. Yes, I’d like to. At a “prom” I would have lots of fun. I think it is a great event to mark my schooldays are over.

Step IV

Speaking and writing Deal with Ex 13-16 on Page 102. Ask students to work in pairs. Several minutes later, ask some pairs to act them out. Sample of the conversation in Ex 13: A: Hello, B. How are you doing these days? B: I have just returned from summer camp. A: Really? B: Yes, I had a wonderful time there. I also learnt some new skills. A: My parents want to send me to camp, but I don’t want to go. My friends are all staying at home. I don’t know anybody there. B: Don’t worry. You will meet new people and make new friends there. I made so many new friends there.

A: I’m quiet and I don’t make friends easily. B: I think it is much more fun than staying at home and being bored. I tried lots of different things for the first time. A: I am not very good at sports. I’m afraid of horses. I don’t like swimming or water sports. B: There’s a lot of choice—I don’t have to do anything I don’t want to do at the camp. A: I haven’t been away from home for long before. B: It makes you feel more independent and “grown up” to be away from home. A: OK, I will have a try. B: Good luck to you and have a good time. A: Thanks. Sample of a letter (Ex 14): Dear mum and dad, How are you? I’m having a good time here. Please don’t worry about me. At first I felt lonely and missed you very much because I didn’t know anybody. Now I’ve made

some new friends here. They are very active and lovely. I tried lots of different things for the first time. Can you believe it? I can ride a horse. You know I was afraid of horses very much. I also learnt some new skills. There’re a lot of

choices here—I don’t want to do anything I don’t want to do. I’m having a lot of fun here. I feel more independent and “grown up” to be away from home. I am sure you will feel very proud of me. Take care! Helen Sample of the discussion (Ex 15): A: I would like to have a prom. At the prom we would have a lot of fun. It is also a great event that marks the end of life as a child, and the beginning of life as an adult. B: I agree, but I think cheerleading is more enjoyable. As know you, only few girls are accepted. to be a cheerleader is to play a very important part in your school. A: But I find studying for the diploma more enjoyable.

B: I think the development of social skills is very important. So I enjoy after-school clubs. A: I don’t like sports training. I like the student newspaper. B: It is important to learn to compete successfully. So school sport is more important than academic achievements. Sample of a short article (Ex 16): Differences between life as an American senior high student

and a student in China The senior high school life in China is not as rich as that in America. Students in China get to study hard everyday, and they have to remember all the things in class. Everyday they have to stay at school for all day; they get off the school at 9:30 P.M.. Being a high school student in China isn’t easy. Teachers and parents are always warning them of the exams. They warn students about college. They tell them that it isn’t going to be easy to pass the college entrance exams. They tell students that it is going to be a big challenge. Only those top students can be admitted to college. The school curriculum is harder. Most students and their parents think academic achievements are more important. In the US the senior high school year is really hectic with filling out applications

and preparing for college.

School runs from 8 am to 3 pm. They don’t have

to devote all the time to studying for the college entrance exams. Out of school other than homework students have a lot of fun. Schools offer a large number of clubs and different after-class activities. For them social skills are more important than academic achievements.

Step V

Homework

Write Ex 16 on Page 102 in their exercise-books. Go over the different clubs at American schools. List the highlights of your school year.

Basketball Club, Football Club, Running Club, Concert Band, Debating Club, Ping-pang Club, Rope -skipping Club, Biology Club and Robot Club. . 10.2. Basketball Club. 10.3. Fashion Club and Drama Club. 10.4. Yes, we have. It is about great events at our school and every student can make his voice heard in the newspaper. 10.5. I’d like to read other students’ opinion about school life and suggestions on how to make school life more colorful. 10.6. I can write articles about my school life. 10.7. Yes, I have. / No, I haven’t. 10.8. Yes, because I can experience and learn what I cannot learn in class. It helps me to develop my social skills. / No, I wouldn’t, because I’m quiet and I don’t make friends easily. 10.9. Yes, my friends and I went to climb mountains. Listening on Page 101 Before playing the tape, Teacher asks students to look through the questions first. According to the questions, students may make a prediction to the listening materials. Play the tape again if necessary. Then check the answers with the whole class.

Step III

Task

Ask students to write an article for a school newspaper about the highlights of their school year. First ask students discuss and make notes of the things that they remember most. Then ask them to look through this module and note down words and phrases that they might want to use in their article. After this, they will discuss how to organize their article. At last they will write the article individually.

A sample of the article: Highlights of My School Days What sculpture is to a block of marble, education is to the human soul. -Addison

Manhood, not scholarship, is the first aim of education. -Ernest Thompson Seton

Education does not mean teaching people what they do not know. It means teaching them to behave as they do not behave. -John Ruchkin

My formal education began at age 6. My memories of what happened to me as a first and second grade student have been erased from my brain, but I clearly remember my third grade teacher; she was a very beautiful person. Miss Liu's facial beauty and the graceful way she carried herself caused people to turn to look at her as she walked through the streets when she took her classes to the zoo. In the third grade I might have learned the multiplication tables quicker, if our teacher had let us recite the tables by singing them. In high school I was afraid of my geometry teacher. When he drew the geometrical figures in our textbook on the blackboard, he would change the letter notations on the lines of these figures. He said his reason for making such changes was to help us think, rather than memorize the way to prove a proposition. My fear of him stemmed from the fact that he never gave us enough time to tell what we thought. He would rush his students through their recitations. The slightest hesitation in anyone's recitation would cause him to say in a loud voice, “Next, you over there,” pointing his finger at a student, “You keep this proof analysis going”.

My favorite subject in high school is chemistry. I think I will choose chemistry as a major in college.

Step V

Home work

Finish writing the article and put all the articles on a board for everyone to read.

本单元课文注释与疑难解析

1. I found a dress that suited me perfectly, and had my hair specially done on the day of the prom.我找到了特别适合我的礼服,在舞会那天还专门作了头发。

a. 注意区分suit, fit & match suit

vt. 1)适合,中……的意

Would Friday morning suit you? 星期五早上对你合适吗? The arrangement suited us both. 这个安排对我们两人都合适。

2)(不用被动式)与...相配,与...相称

This dress suits you beautifully. 这件衣服你穿非常合适。

3)使合适;使适应[(+to)] Her speech was well suited to the occasion. 她的讲话在这个场合十分得体。

vi. 1) 合适,适当

Will that time suit? 这时间合适吗? 2) 相称;彼此协调[(+to/with)] The position suits with his abilities. 这个职位与他的能力相称。

fit

1) (衣服)合……身;与……相称

常指尺寸大小是否合适。

This dress doesn’t fit me. 这件衣服不适合我穿。

2)

适合于;使适合

[(+for)] We must fit the action to the word. 我们必须言行一致。

Her training fits her for the job. 她所受的训练使她能胜任这项工作。

match

和……相配,和……相称

指服饰是否相匹配。

The color of the shirt does not match that of the tie.

衬衫的颜色与领带不相配。

b. have sth done

Last year we had the house rebuilt.去年我们把这房子翻修了一下。

Last year we rebuilt the house.去年我们将这房子翻修了一下。

注意:第一句是我们请人翻修;第二句是我们自己动手翻修。再如:

They had a picture taken with the Japanese friends. She intended to have her daughter educated in China. There is something wrong with the radio. I must have it repaired. 2) 同时,have sth done还表示遭遇到某事的意思。此时,主语是无意中的受害者,而不是动作的执行者。如:

She had her watch stolen.她的表给人偷了。

He had his leg injured while playing football.他在踢足球时腿受了伤。

注意:上句她的表被人偷了,而不是她叫人偷的;下句他的腿受了伤,而不是他叫人把他的腿弄伤的。

2. Older teenagers are more likely to get summer jobs or go camping with a group of friends.大点的孩子更可能找暑期工作或者和朋友一起去露营。

likely adj. 很可能的, 合适的, 可靠的, 有希望的

be likely to do很可能,有希望

The train is likely to be late. 这趟火车很可能晚点。

John is likely to be in London this autumn. 今年秋天约翰可能在伦敦。

They are likely to become angry with him. 他们可能会对他发怒。

She is likely to win the prize. 她最有希望得奖。

II. 语法:主语从句和表语从句

A. 主语从句: 用作主语的从句称之为主语从句。例如:

Whether he’ll come or not remains a question .他是否会来依然是一个问题。

Whoever says that is not allowed .无论谁这样说都是不允许的。

That she reads English aloud every morning helps her a lot in the improvement of her English study. 她每天早晨朗读英文对提高她的英语学习起了很大的作用。

要点提示: 在使用主语从句时,有几个问题值得我们注意:

1)尽管连词that在主语从句中没有任何意义,但不能省略。

That there is no elevator in the building is the critical inconvenience. 这幢楼里没有电梯是极大的不便之处。

It is necessary (that) he have his further study in college. (当主语从句在后面时,连词that可以省去)他在大学进一步深造是完全必要的。

2)为了保持句子平衡或在正式文体中,常用代词It代替主语从句而将主语从句置于句末。

It remains a question whether he'll come or not. 他是否会来,仍然是一个问题。

It is not allowed whoever says that. 无论谁这样说都是不允许的。

3)在It + be +形容词/ 名词

+ that从句的结构中,由于某些形容词/名词的原因,that从句中的谓语动词要用虚拟式。

这类形容词/名词常见的有:

essential(绝对必要的), important(重要的), advisable(明智的), desirable(希望能够的), imperative(紧急的), natural(自然的), necessary(必要的), regretful(遗憾的), strange(奇怪的), proper(适当的), urgent(紧急的), duty(义务、责任), a pity (遗憾), no wonder(难怪), a regret(遗憾)。例如:

It is strange that he (should) say so. 他居然会这样说,真是奇怪。

It is a great pity that you (should) think so. 他居然会这样想,真是一件憾事。

It is natural that a bird (should) rest in trees. 鸟在树上安歇是很自然的。

It is a wonder that he should have passed the exam. 他这次考试居然会及格,真是个奇迹。

4)以what引导的主语从句应注意,what在从句中不仅起连接作用,而且做句子成分。

What they need now is financial aid. 他们现在所需要的是经济援助。

What she thinks of me doesn't mean much to me. 她怎么样看我,对我来说无所谓。

What you have said hurt her a lot .你所说的话对她伤害很大。

B. 表语从句

在句子中担当表语的主谓结构称之为表语从句。它常位于句中联系动词或是起联系动词作用的动词之后.例如:

The problem is where we can hold our meeting. 问题是我们可以在哪儿举行会议。

It seems that everything goes smoothly. 似乎一切都进行得很顺利。

The cause is that the temperature of water is lower than needed. 其原因是水的温度低于所需要的温度。

That is what he really wants. 那就是他真想要的东西。

III. 文化背景知识

American Education System

US Kindergarten: In the United States, children can attend kindergarten at their option plus six years of required elementary school and 6 years of required junior and senior high school. Parents also have the option of sending their children to a private pre-school before kindergarten. In the United States, kindergarten is usually a half day session for a five or six year old. They learn the alphabet, colors, etc. After finishing kindergarten the children move on to elementary school.

US Elementary School: The elementary school in the United States consists of six years, with the child moving up a grade each year. In these six years, the child learns to read and write, do basic math, and also learn about the world around them. They learn history, science,

health and physical education. In most cases, children are only taught by one teacher. They stay in the same classroom with the same students for all of these subjects.

US Junior and Senior High School: In junior and senior high school , the variety of subjects broadens immensely. The students usually attend between six and eight different classes per day. Each class consists of different students and each one is also taught by a different teacher. The student has the choice of taking a few classes of personal preference. Students graduate at the end of their 12th year in school if they have met all of their requirements. After that they may choose to go into the job market, start an apprenticeship, or enroll in a college or university.

US Colleges and Universities: In the Colleges and Universities, a student learns more about what his or her planned job is going to be like and she/he receives training for his or her job.

This is the United States Education System.

The Prom

Prom Coordinators & Committees Prom is always a big undertaking, but it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Getting help with the planning and all the little details that will make your prom perfect are

the keys to success. We’ve gathered together tips from successful prom coordinators, professional prom planners, and prom committee members.

Prom Committee Checklist: Prom committees should be formed at the beginning of the school year. You must choose the date and location first. Choosing A Location Depending on the location, you may have to book it a few months before or up to 16-18 months in advance. Evaluate the facility for sound capability and whether it can handle a large band. Check it for adequate parking. Some places will offer to decorate, provide food, and security. Find out exactly what their price includes. Choosing Entertainment If you decide on choosing a band, consider at least three. Try and listen to them in person. You can talk to last year’s committee and see if they have any suggestions. Choose a versatile band that can play several styles of music. If you decide on using a DJ, confirm what type of sound and lighting equipment is included in the price quote. Some DJ’s will include a light show, fog machine, etc. Make sure that the DJ has a current music library. Ask for a list of school references. Once you select the DJ check their space requirement for their equipment and also special power requirements. Once you hire a band/DJ make sure they are aware of particular songs that you may want played at the prom (theme song, or class favorites). Make sure you get everything in writing, including time, date, and location. Include the name of the DJ and/or musicians in the contract in order to avoid bait and switch tactics. Be sure that the band/DJ has liability insurance. Choosing A Photographer Once you know the event date, book the photographer. Make sure you get bids and check references. Ask if they offer rebates to schools to help defray the cost of the event. Check with the photographer to get the necessary ordering and payment information. Ask what package selections are available. Be sure to get the delivery time of the photos in writing. You

may want to consider posting a sign-up sheet for photo time-slots in order to organize the photo shoot. You can make a photographic background to coordinate with the event’s theme or the photographer may have one that goes

with your theme. Many photographers have sets with different themes to choose from. If you make your own, consult with the photographer in order to get the correct size and material needed. Select a background that enhances the formal look.

Choosing A Theme

Here Are Some Popular Prom Themes: A Stroll Down Hour Enchantment Destiny Awaits Treasured of The Perfect Prom Hopelessly Devoted Picture Perfect Daring to Dream Waltz Under the Blue Moon A Dream For Us Broadway I Believe Our Night Carried Away Memories to Last a Lifetime Never Let You Go Springtime in Paris Paint the Town Red Hollywood Nights Show Meaning Moving On Me the Everything Want Simply Forever For You Always Forever and The Way You Love You’ll Be in my Me Under the Sea Heart Still the One Me I will Remember Waiting You Larger than Life Big Band Tonight When You Believe Candle In In the Still of the Remember Night This Way Still The One The Unforgettable

Wind Decorations A prom kit can be purchased from various catalogs, but they are expensive and you still have to assemble them. You can get ideas from their catalogs and build your own. Local rental companies may have some of what you need at a better price. Check both options and choose the one that best fits your school's budget. Security Some sites chosen for prom will include security, but in most cases you must provide your own. You could hire a security company or off-duty police officers. Check with the local school board and police officials for guidance in this area. Prom Fundraisers Typical fundraisers include selling candy and donuts, and washing cars. Also, magazine sales are popular.

You can also contact local fast-food restaurants or small businesses such as hair salons to see if they will donate a percentage of their proceeds for a specific time period.

A fashion show could be arranged with the help of local formalwear stores and department stores to showcase prom fashions and also spring fashions.

Your school could make a sports highlight video to sell to the community.

Poinsettia sales are popular around Christmas.

Rummage sale or an auction.

Set up a booth at the mall to wrap Christmas presents.

Talent show. Raffle for donated products.
