Teaching Design For My First Ride on a Train: Reading and Vocabulary TEACHING CONTENT: Reading and Vocabulary, My First Ride on a Train, Module 3, Book 1 TEACHING GOALS: 1 Knowledge and skill goals

To learn some new words and phrases as well as revising some old ones;

To improve students’ reading skills, in which skipping and scanning skills are inclusive;

To encourage students to co-operate on the understanding of some long and difficult sentences. 2 Process and method goals

To attract students’ attention on what they are learning by making them compete with each other;

To improve students’ discussing efficiency to complete some tasks together. 3 Emotion, attitude and value goals

To make students be able to think about the significance of travel and then could be fond of traveling and reading and other things which can make their life more colorful;

To help students learn to enjoy the beauty of colorful scenery. TEACHING IMPORTANT POINTS AND DIFFICULT POINTS: Important points: understanding of the main ideas of the text and some detailed points. Difficult points: understanding of the long and difficult sentences.(Students can co-operate to make the answers more clear.)

TEACHING METHODS: Translation; Brainstorming; Discussion; Composing songs. TEACHING PROCEDURES: Step 1 Warming up Call on some volunteers to have a dictation on the words they’ve just learned and the students who don’t spell the words correctly have to leave the blackboard as soon as possible. Finally the group which has the least leavings will be the winner.(3 minutes) Step 2 Lead-in Make students translate the sentence displayed on the screen by co-operating:(2 minutes) The world is a huge book and those who do not travel read only one page. Step 3 Fast reading Make students read the text quickly and finish exercise I and exercise II on their exercise books on Page 27.(Students would be given 10 minutes and then volunteers would stand up to present their answers.) Step 4 Careful reading Make students read the text carefully and finish exercise III on their exercise books on Page 27.(Students would be given 10 minutes and then volunteers would stand up to present their answers.)) Step 5 Discussion Make students discuss in groups and work out what the following sentences mean: 1 What a ride!
