Ⅰ. Analysis on the students and the teaching material.

The reading passage is a script of a famous play, My Fair Lady, which mainly talks about a poor flower girl Eliza Doolittle, who is ambitious to improve herself and with the help of a phonetics named Higgins, she finally succeed. As students of Senior Grade 2, they are familiar with plays and have great interests in it.

Ⅱ. Teaching aims. 1. Knowledge goals: by the end of the class, the students are able to know the concept of Pygmalion effect, the specific plot of the play and master some key words and expressions in this passage. For example, hesitate, troublesome, outcome, brilliant, remark, betray, upper, phonetics, extraordinary, authentic, pass…….off, make one’s acquaintance, judging from/by……, misstate A for B, classify……into. 2. Ability goals: enable students to analyze the main characters accurately and master the usage of past participle. 3. Emotional goals: encourage students to believe in themselves and stick to the faith that they can reach the expectation only if they determine to change themselves and never give up.

Ⅲ. Teaching important and difficult points. How to make students fully understand the language of the play and analyze the characteristic of each figure accurately.

Ⅵ. Teaching procedure Step 1 Warming-up(3mins) Share a Greek story with students and introduce the related concept of Pygmalion Effect and the play as well as the film adapted from the Greek story. (Purpose: to arouse students’ interests and stimulate their curiosity.)

Step 2 Pre-reading (6mins)

Since the play was made into a film My Fair Lady, so ask students to guess one

possible plot.

Step 3 Careful-reading(22mins) 1. What is the name of the man hiding from the rain?

Henry Higgins

2. Why is Eliza frightened of him at first?

She thinks he is a policeman in disguise. 3. Where has Colonel Pickering been living and what has he studied?

He has been living in India and has studied many Indian dialects. 4. Who is Henry Higgins anxious to meet and why?

He is anxious to meet Colonel Pickering because he is researching in the same academic field. 5. What is Eliza’s ambition and what does she decide to do about it?

Her ambition is to be a shop assistant. She decides to take lessons from Professor Higgins. 6. How can we distinguish the social class? By the wealth, job, education, clothes, speech, behavior, attitude......

Step 4 Post-reading (8mins) 1. Choose the best adjectives to describe each character in the play.(p. 31, exercise 4)

2. Suppose you have a chance to help Eliza improve her use of the English. Correct all these sentences in terms of grammar, spelling, etc, so that she can use them correctly. 1. Come over’ere, cap’in, and buy me flowers off a poor girl.

Come over here, captain, and buy flowers from a poor girl. 2. I ain’t done nothing wrong by speaking to that gentleman.
