Lu Jiaao I. Teaching objectives: By the end of the class, the students will be able to:

1. grasp some basic information about the history of the Olympic Games and some world-famous Olympic athletes. 2. make a speech confidently about their favorite athletes or sports while presenting their premade PPTs 3. add a sensible or special ending to a Greek myth whose end hasn’t been revealed 4. have some knowledge of the significance of taking exercise regularly

Communicative language teaching 3. Free discussion method IV. Teaching procedures: Step1 Lead-in 1. Play a MTV of the theme song of 2016 Rio Olympics and show some relevant pictures and then ask students what is the most impressive moment to them. 2. Get students to do a quiz of some basic information about the past and future Olympic Games. Step2 Reading material A: textbook, reading Fast reading 1. Ask students to read the text quickly and figure out the topic of the speech.

2. Make an outline and help students understand the structure of the speech and get the main idea of each part.

Detailed reading 1. Get the students to read each part carefully to find the detailed information. 2. Ask students to compare the ancient and modern Olympics by listening for the difference between them.

3. Invite some students to introduce several well-known athletes by filling some basic information in the blanks. Step3 Making a speech

1. Discussion: encourage students to engage in sharing their favorite sportsmen or sports with their partners. 2. Presentation: invite two volunteers to make a speech by presenting their premade PPTs. Step4 Reading material B: a Greek myth Thinking before reading What personal qualities an athlete should bear if he or she aims to participate in the Olympics? While-reading Ask students to get the main character and make the correct order of the events while listening to the tape. Discussion 1. Guide students to discuss and add a sensible or special ending to the Greek myth whose end hasn’t been revealed yet. 2. Show students the end of the story and let them read and compare it with the one they have made up. Writing Ask students to summarize the complete story with one sentence and share it with everyone.
