Application letter plays a vital part in our daily life, especially when you want to apply for a job in a company. Since 2006, students’

ability in writing application letters have been tested twice. The writing requirements are as follows:

The writing of 2006 is to apply to work as a volunteer in the winter games and the writing of 2012 is to apply to take part in an international summer camp. Both writings are about the ability or the advantages of the applicants. Compared with the writing of 2006, the writing of 2012 should be added more details, or we can say it is more open, so it is more difficult for the students to write it well.

About the students The students I’m teaching now is science students in Senior Three of a general high school ,some of whom are quite poor in English and are afraid of English writing . What’s worse,

this writing style is new to them so some of the students find it hard to get it start or to develop the writing. Teaching aims:

1.Improve the students’

writing strategies of analyzing,organizing and developing the content.

2.Train the students to write with correct sentences and richer words. 4.Help the students master the characteristic of the writing style and make up the outline. 5.Help the students form the habit of peer-checking and develop the skills of correcting the errors in the writing passage. Teaching important points

1.Help the students to gain the ability of analyzing and organizing the writing materials. 2.Help the students to cooperate with others, especially when both of them are poor in English. 3.Enjoy a beautiful sample and try to follow the sample to write a good passage,then work out the writing outline. Teaching difficult points

1Get the students to analyze the material and develop the passage.

2.Help the students to write the passage in richer words and correct sentences.

3.Work out the outline together.

4.Train the students to check others’ passage and find out the errors

Teaching procedures:

Step1 : Greetings and lead in(1m)

Good morning, everyone. Today we are going to write an application letter. As we all know, there is an old Chinese saying “熟读唐诗三百首，不会作诗也会吟”，so first ,I’ll show you a good application letter.

Aims: raise the students’ interest

Step2: Read and enjoy a good passage(3 mins)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I’m Li Hua from Class Three, Grade Three. I am glad to learn that 14 students from the UK will come to our school on a cultural exchange program. My family would like to apply to be a host family for a British student.

There are three members in my family, my parents and me. All of us do very well in communicating in English, since my father and mother both work as teachers in universities. Currently, we have a spare bedroom available with an attached bathroom and free Internet access. Besides, my house is only five-minute walking distance away. It will be very convenient for him to get to and from school every day. I believe my guest will enjoy his stay here.Thank you for considering my application and I am looking forward to your early reply.

Enjoy the passage by reading aloud and ask the students how many parts the passage can be divided into. Aims: Show the students an example to make it easier for them to write a passage of the same style by themselves.

Cross-question

Decide the tense, person ,and the writing purpose of the writing assignment. Aims: help the students make clear about the writing purpose, enable them to analyze a writing.

Creating a complete outline (1)questions and answer: Who are you? How did you know the information? Why do you want to join the summer camp? What ability do you have? (2)

Brainstorm: What advantages do you have if you want to join the camp? Aims: helping the students think about the outline of the writing by asking them some questions will make it easier for them to write the passage and develop a good habit of learning. Step3: while writing(15 mins)

Give the students 15 minutes to write the passage and ask two students to write their passage on the blackboard. The teacher goes around the class to see if she can offer some help to the students. Aims:limiting the writing time to raise the students’

writing skills in the limited time, practice their quick thought. Step 4: after writing(8 mins) 1.

Peer-editing

Exchange their writing with their partners and then check if there are errors with the spelling ,tense, phrases,grammar ,etc. Aims: not only relieve students’ writing anxiety, but also make the students help each other, as well as train the students’ ability of finding errors and correct them. From this activity we can also train the students’ ability in understanding the discourse. 2.

The teacher assess a passage on the blackboard.

Evaluate the passage base on the standard and encourage students to write better passage and raise their interest in writing by giving confidence to them. Aims: give the students an evaluating standard and tell them the things they need to pay attention to while writing.

Step 5: Enjoy the sample(5 mins) Pay attention to the discourse and the highlights and make the students read the passage aloud. Aims: enjoy the sample and the highlights of a good passage, reinforce the students’ ability of

writing.

Step6: summary(3 mins) How to write a good application letter? Show the student the outline of this writing style .
