Project Writing a Science Fiction Story I. Teaching Objectives After the class, students will be able to: 1.

Step 1 Lead in Show students a short video clip of the science fiction film Ready Player One and then have a free talk with students. Questions are as follows: What is the type of the film?

How do you feel when watching such a kind of film?

Have you ever read any science fiction stories?

Which one do you like best? Do you know how to write a science fiction story Step 2 Guide students to understand what a science fiction story is like by filling in the blanks and by showing them an outline.

Step 3 Sample Reading 1.

Ask students to read the first passage Journey to the Centre of the Earth and ask them to fill in the blanks to complete the summary of the passage. (The summary is actually the highlight of the story) 2.

Ask students to talk about what impressed them most in this passage. (Possible answers: What impressed me most is that they came across dinosaurs during their journey because dinosaurs have been extinct for millions of thousands years;

What impressed me most is that they travelled to the centre of the earth because it is impossible to go to the centre of the earth) 3.

Lead students to summarize the factors that make this story so impressive.

Ask students to read the second passage The Time Machine and answer several questions. ⑴What does the scientist find when he travels to year AD 802,701? (Key: They find that human beings had evolved into two races: the Eloi and the Morlocks) ⑵What is the world thirty million years into the future like? (Key: Everything was still--there was no life or movement at all. In the end, the world turned into total darkness) Then, have a free talk with students based on the second question. Do you think it possible that the world will completely disappear from the universe? Why? (Yes, air pollution; environmental pollution) ⑶What does the story want to warn us about? (Possible answer: We should take action to protect our environment in case someday in the future there would be no human beings at all.)

Ask students to work in groups of five and decide what they are going to write about in their science fiction story to make a good title for their story at first. 3.

Ask students to create their own science fiction story according to the following requirements: ①Write the most amazing part of your story (at least three paragraphs)

② Draw some pictures to impress others about your story 4.
