Grade: Senior 1 Writing a science fiction story Reading

Teaching time: 45 minutes Overall Design and Guiding Principles This reading lesson aims to develop student’s ability to get the main information in short time. At the same time, we hope it can help students make a progress towards their individual thinking.

I would like to mainly use The Direct Way, Totally Physical Response and Communicative Language Teaching, with a little help of other methods. They can help build a relaxing atmosphere to help students learn in a happy way, which can emphasis on not only language, but also on the learning process itself. Since this class is based on the fantasy, these three methods can help students learn quickly. Teaching Aims Aims of knowledge: (1) Master and use some important words. (2) Be capable of using the expression about science fiction.

(3) Master some methods of independent study. Key Points and Difficult Points Key points: 1. Master the key words. 2. Get the correct information from the reading material. Teaching Aids 1. text book 2. power point 3. a video clip

Teaching Procedure Step 1：Lead-in: (5min) Show ss two pictures of two fiction movies. Use one question “Do they actually happen in our life?” to lead ss to the key word-science fiction. Ask one of ss to explain the word for others. Chinese is permitted.

Step 2: Discussion: (5min) There are three questions ss need to consider about science fiction. Show the question one by one. Ss can answer the first two questions together. The last one should be answered by one student and added by the teacher, Do you know what science fiction is? It is a type of writing based on fantasy and imagination. What do science fiction writers often write about? What will happen in ‘tomorrow’s world’.

What elements make up a story? Time, place/setting, characters, plot.

Step 3: Video:(5min) In this part, ss can enjoy the video. Before the video, ss need have a question in their mind, proposed by the teacher in oral English, what’s he main idea of this video? After the video, ss can conclude the content with the help of tips, the five elements of a story which is time, place/setting, characters, plot. Ss can work in a group to answer the question. A man and a boy explored a mysterious island in the center of the earth with the help of a local pilot and a guide. The came across many special creatures and an old man. All of them had to escape the island or died from the erupting volcano in the end.

Step 4: Reading:(10min) 1.Ss need read the first passage with the questions given before reading: 1)

Where do the German professor and his nephew travel to? They travel to the center of the Earth 2) What do they see during their journey? They see a big underground ocean, a beautiful forest, ancient animals. 3) How do they come back to the world above? A volcano in southern Italy brings them back to the Earth’s surface.

2.Ss need read the second passage with the questions given before reading: The Time Machine 1)What has the scientist invented?

He has invented a machine. 2)What does he find when he travels to year AD 802,701?

He finds two kinds of creatures—the Eloi and the Morlocks. 3)What is the world thirty million years into the future like? The sun no longer shines in that world, so it is cold and scary.

Step 5:

Careful reading: (10min) Read the text carefully and fill in the chart with the information in the text. Journey to the Centre of the Earth

Step 6: Discussion: (8min) If you had a time machine, what would you like to see,

Step 7: Homework:(2min) Read the passage again and try to write your own simple science fiction story. Some of you need share the story with your classmates next class.
