A day at the Palace Museum Step 1 Lead-in Memory game. T: Some exchange students are visiting Sunshine Town. Neil is one of them. He took some photos during the visit. Now I’ll show them to you only once. Can you remember what’s in the photos? Are you ready? Let’s go. T: What are they doing in the photos? And where are they? T: Well done. You have a good memory. The exchange students have visited some places. But they are still thinking, “What place in Beijing can’t we miss?”

S: The Palace Museum. Step 2

Before-listening 1. Watch a video. Show the picture of the Palace Museum and play a video with pictures of palaces in it. 2. Have a competition. T: How much do you know about the Palace Museum? You will be divided into two groups and have a competition. Let’s see which group knows more about it.

(1) Is the Palace Museum square or round? (2) Who lived in it?

(3) Which two colours are the main colours of it?

(4) What’s at the southern end of it?

3. Fast reading. T: Do you want to know more about the Palace Museum? Let’s read an introduction quickly, and then answer some questions.

(1) Who lived in the Palace Museum? (2) When did the kings live in it? (3) Why is it like a treasure box? 4. Listen and answer. T: Listen to the introduction and answer the fourth question.

(4) What do the numbers mean, 720,000, 10, 52, 9999.5 and 3? Step 3 Listening 1. Read and complete. T: There will be a treasure show in the Palace Museum. Here is a poster of the show. Read the poster and complete part of the table on Page 37. 2. Listen and complete. T: Listen to the guide’s introduction and find out the things to see at the show. Tips: (1) Get different information each time. For example, find out the things to see first and the time second.

(2) Pay attention to key words.

(3) Write the first letter of the word if time is limited. T: Listen to the introduction again and find out the time to complete the rest of the table. 3. Correct the mistakes in Part A4. Step 4 After-listening 1. Complete Neil’s diary. 2. Introduce Suqian to foreign students. T: Some foreign students are coming to our school in a few days. They have different hobbies. Where are you going to take them to?

Anna likes nice food. Jack likes seeing old buildings. Mary likes shopping. Tom likes beautiful view. T: I’ll divide you into four groups and each group should choose one of the topics. There are some words on the screen that may help you. B

Speak up: What time shall we meet? Step 1 Lead-in Free talk. T: If you are going to show foreign students around, what should you plan for the visit?

How far is it? Who is going with us?

Step 2 Listening 1. Listen and complete the table. 2. Pair work. T: Work in pairs and talk about Simon and Neil’s plan.

—They are going to Beihai Park.

Step 3 Production T: It’s time for you to make a plan for the foreign students’ visit. Work in pairs. One will be a foreign student. You can use the conversation on the screen as a model. V. Homework
