At the end of this period , Ss are expected to :

1.understand the ways to make a business presentation clear and convincing:

compare and present detailed information.

2.write a short passage to explore the use of VR in classroom teaching by using the expressions and skills learnt in this period. 3. stimulate their curiosity to explore the usages of VR or other latest technology in daily life.

This is the second period of the reading passage. In the previous one, Ss finished reading the contents. The main aim of this period is to help students understand the contents of reading strategy and apply what they have learned to writing.

1. Tell Ss they are going to find out the ways that the writer used in this passage in order to make the presentation clear and convincing.

2. Present the ways separately

1) How to compare Invite Ss to read paragraph two and ask them to find out the sentence which shows RealCine is better than other films.

Present the sentence “Unlike a film, where a passive

audience watches and hears what is Step 3 happening on a screen, RealCine puts you Presenting into the action and connects with your senses of sight, hearing, smell and touch in an active

way”on PPT. Remind Ss to pay attention to the words highlighted, and encourage students to think of more words or phrases which are used to compare different information.

Give Ss some more exercises to practice.

2) How to give detailed information. Use the examples from the text to help Ss 以课本材料(商业产品的推广介绍)为蓝本,引领学生去欣赏,学习和借鉴此类文本的写作技巧。

通过教材中事例的说明,帮助学生进一步了解VR技术的先进性,及进一步探讨VR在教学上运用的可能。

how to give examples. Have Ss look at paragraph 2 again. List the example “Imagine

that a VR user ‘goes’

sightseeing in the Himalayas. Not only will he or she feel every step of climbing Mount Qomolangma, but the user will also experience the cold, smells, sights and sounds of the surrounding environment; he or she will enjoy a feeling of happiness

and a sense of achievement

upon reaching the top.”

Remind Ss to pay attention to the bold words. And give them more exercises to practice. 1. Ask Ss to write a short passage to show how VR can make traditional classes become more interesting and effective.

Step 4 2. Require that in the passage one or more Imitating examples should be given, and the ways and phrases they have learnt be applied to the writings.

3.Have Ss write the short passage.

1.Have Ss divided into group of 4 or 5.

Ask them to

read their passages to other group members.

Group members decide whose passage is the best. When choosing the best passage, Ss should obey the following assessments:

1). Do they use the given expressions?( How Step 5 many,? The more, the better.) Sharing 2). Do they compare the information?

3). Do they give detailed information? 4). Do you think their passage is appealing and convincing? 2. Pick out two to three members recommended by Ss to read their passage aloud in front of whole class.

Not just watching a film…

RealCine-virtual reality for everyone This presentation will give you some information about RealCine: how it works, why it is better than a film, and how it can be used in other ways. The RealCine experience will amaze you, and you will agree that this is an extraordinary technology that deserves to be developed further. The technology behind RealCine is virtual reality (VR). Unlike a film, where a passive audience watches and hears what is happening on a screen, RealCine puts you into the action and connects with your senses of sight, hearing, smell and touch in an active way. Imagine that a VR user ‘goes’ sightseeing in the Himalayas. Not only will he or she feel every step of climbing Mount Qomolangma, but the user will also experience the cold, smells, sights and sounds of the surrounding environment; he or she will enjoy a feeling of happiness and a sense of achievement upon reaching the top. RealCine works by making the users feel that they are really in a new world—a world that does not exist except in a computer program. To achieve this, special VR headsets are designed to allow the user to see in 3-D and hear the sound all around them. The movements of the headset indicate the direction in which the user wants to go. The user also wears special gloves so he or she can ‘touch’ the people and objects that he or she sees. To add to the virtual world of RealCine, the headsets even have small openings that give out smells to match the environment. Both the headsets and the gloves are connected to a computer network in the VR studio. In scientific studies it has been shown that VR can be a good treatment for people who have social problems. In one case, a teenager who was afraid of talking and playing with his schoolmates was treated with VR. In the world created by RealCine, he became the captain of the Brazilian football team and scored the winning goal in a World Cup final. This encouraged him to become more confident around others. An argument has been put forward that some users will be disappointed by RealCine because VR is not real. However, with VR we are able to do things that could never be achieved in real life. For example, with the aid of

RealCine, a seventy-year-old grandfather recently took a trip to Africa. In reality, he is disabled and can no longer walk, but he was able to see and touch a lion while still in the convenience of the VR studio. Besides this, VR can be used to practise skills in a secure environment that otherwise would be quite dangerous. For example, firefighters could use RealCine to train safety, without the risk of getting injured in a burning building. It could be used in class as well. Teachers could bring history alive by placing students in an accident town, or they could teach biology by allowing students to experience the world as a whale or a squirrel. Finally, RealCine provides fantastic technology for urban planning. Engineers can enter the design of a neighbourhood into a computer, and then use VR to ‘walk’ around the neighbourhood, see how it looks and make changes before construction is carried out. This kind of urban planning is in the long term cheaper and more practical, compared with the way most urban planning is done today. I recommend the government use this technology in the future planning of this city.
