“How To Polish Your Writing”

By Zhong Peijing Analysis on students It is not difficult for students to apply two or three advanced techniques to their writing, such as advanced vocabulary and some clauses. However, they usually pick these techniques at random. Besides, it’s inescapable that they will make some mistakes, downgrading their passages. Teaching aims 1.

Knowledge aim: to learn 5 approaches 2.

Ability aim: to analyze how to apply 5 approaches to different sentences 3.

Emotional aim: to develop the team spirit and enjoy the achievement from group work. Key point and difficult point 1.

The key point is to explain the five approaches clearly. 2.

The difficult point is how to apply these approaches to the writing. Teaching procedures: 1.

Lead-in: Reflection on how to improve students’ writing after talking with some students. 2.

An introduction of five approaches. 3.

The first approach—appositive ①

The definition of appositive and its position ②

Examples and exercise ③

Conclusion: the function of it is to explain something new or some person 4.

The second one -- compound sentences ①

The function of it is to show the logic between two sentences ②

Examples and exercise ③

Apart from the compound words, we can also try some emotional words to show the logic, such as “unfortunately”,“in return”.

The third one -- doing/ done/ to do/ phrases with preposition ①

Example: comparison of different sentences to pick out the better sentences ②

The function of the use of phrases is to upgrade the level. 6.

The fourth one—clauses & with ①

Distinguish different clauses

The function of different clauses is to make the sentences unique from others. ③

Comparison exercises ④

Conclusion: a sentence with different techniques will be much more favorable and the clauses can make the passage longer

The last one—advanced vocabulary ①

Exercises with tips to help students get the probable word or phrase to explain the sentence clearly rather than a long and unnecessary sentence ②

Conclusion: advanced vocabulary is used to cut the passage short 8.

A conclusion and a tip—Don’t try to make every sentence very long, otherwise, the judge may get tired, which means that it will not be easy for you to get a high mark in your writing either. 9.

Group task to polish a simple passage within 10 minutes with two tasks. 10.
