Good habits
Analysis of the teaching material: This text is about Liu Tao and Wang Bing. They are good friends with different habits. This story can educate students to develop good habits and have a better life.
Analysis of the students: What they have already learned: Most students in Grade 6 can read the text without too much difficulty. They have learned the third person singular form. They are beginning to learn the simple past tense so they have some knowledge about these grammar points. What they are expected to achieve from this class: According to the New English Curriculum and the Core Competence, we should develop students’
learning abilities as well as critical thinking abilities. After learning this class, we expect students to read the new words correctly, read the text fluently, use the sentence patterns to communicate with others
and try to develop good habits in their daily lives.
Teaching aims and learning objectives: At the end of this class, students are able to: 1.
Understand the text. 2.
Read the text fluently. 3.
Describe their own habits. 4.
Know that it’s important to develop good habits.
Focus of the lesson: 1.
Students can understand the text as a whole. 2.
Students can read the text fluently and try to describe their own habits.
Predicted area of difficulty: 1.
Students can use the third person singular form correctly. 2.
Students can develop good awareness towards the importance of habits.

Teaching procedure: Step1 Warming up (2~3minutes) Greetings.
Free talk. Introduce my day. T: I usually get up at 6:30.
I go to school at 7:20.
I don’t eat my breakfast.
I have lunch at 12 o’clock.
I play the guitar in the afternoon.
I go home at 5:30.
I read books for two hours.
And I go to bed at 11:50.
What do you think of my day? Do I have good habits? What are they? Do I have bad habits? What are they? (Purpose: This part enables students to speak freely about me. Students are interested in teacher’s day. In this way, they’ll feel
happy and relaxed, which lay a good foundation for this class.)
Step2 Presentation ( 17~18minutes) Task 1 Watch and answer Watch the video and answer the question. Who are they? Who go to bed late? (Purpose: Through watching the video, students can learn the text as a whole. And they should watch carefully with the questions in the mind.) Task 2 Read and find Read the first paragraph and underline Wang Bing’s habits. Teach the new phrases: brush his teeth, put his things in order. Read them group by group. (Purpose: It’s important for us to cultivate students’
learning abilities. Through reading and finding, students will have a better understanding of the text.) Task3 Listen and finish Listen to the second paragraph and finish the exercises. 1 ( F ) Liu Tao doesn’t listen to his teacher at school. 2 ( T ) Liu Tao keeps his room clean and tidy. 3 ( F ) Liu Tao often goes to bed early. 4 ( T ) Liu Tao sometimes feels sleepy in the morning.
Teach the new words: sleepy, tidy etc. (Purpose: This part let students listen carefully and answer questions. Students’ listening abilities can be enhanced.) Task4 Read and answer Read the last part of the text and answer the questions. Does Wang Bing know Liu Tao well? Did Liu Tao go to bed late last night? What does Wang Bing say to him?
Step3 Practice (9~10minutes) Task 5 Do a role play Work in groups of three to do a role play. Tip: Use your expressions and gestures. (Purpose: This part enables students to work in groups which may help improves students’
confidence and their abilities of cooperation. )
Task6 Let’s read! Read after the tape. Read in groups. Retell Wang Bing’s habits or Liu Tao’s habits. (Purpose: After learning the text, it’s necessary to let students
read the text. In this way, their overall language abilities can be developed.)
Step4 Production (5~6 minutes) Task 7 Let’s talk! What’s your habit? What good habits do you want to develop? Work in groups and talk with your friends. Task 8 Let’s write! Write your good habits down. (Purpose: Based on the New English Curriculum and the Core Competence, we should pay attention to improve students’
learning abilities and critical think abilities. This part enables students to think about their own habits and use English to express these habits.)
Step5 Homework (1minute)
1 Read the text fluently. 2 Write the new words three times. 3 Write down your bad habits and make a plan to change them!
