Teaching Procedures: Step I. Lead-in

(No.2~4)

Play two advertisements (a commercial advertisement and a public service advertisement) on the screen.

And ask students to think about some questions: (1) Do you like advertisements? (2) Do you think there are too many ads and that they are everywhere? (3) Why do companies and organizations advertise? (4) What kind of things can be advertised? 【Commercial advertisements are meant to sell products or services.

Public service advertisements (PSAs) are meant to make people think about problems in society or about people who need help.】

Step II. Activity—Advertising competition (No.5)

T: Remember that your group need to design an advertisement for the competition next week.

You should begin working on your advertisement soon.

In order to help you design your group’s advertisement better, before you begin, there is an article about advertisements written by a student for her English project, it can help you to learn more about ads.

Step III. Reading strategy: reading ‘expository writing’ (No.6)

Expository writing is meant to introduce you to basic information on a topic.

It usually follows the same format: ① introduction of the subject ② examples and facts that develop or support the idea ③ conclusion

Step IV. Tips (No.7~8)

When you read a statement in expository writing. For example, 'Even if an ad does not lie, it does not mean it is altogether innocent.'

Always look at the information that follows it.

You should be able to find facts to support the idea, such as, 'All it says is that it fights it, and that is not the same thing at all.'

The author will follow this information with a conclusion, which tells you what you are supposed to learn from the passage:

'We must not fall for this kind of trick!'

Step V. Fast-reading (No.9~11)

A. Read the following article quickly and answer these questions. (Page.2)

1. What do ads try to persuade people to do?

To buy a product or service, or to believe in an idea. 2. What does PSA stand for?

Public service advertisement. 3. What do PSAs aim to do?

PSAs / They aim to teach us and help us lead better lives.

D. Match these new words from the article with their meanings. (Page.4) 1. persuade (h. make someone do sth. by giving him/her good reasons) 2. welfare (c. the general health, happiness and safety of a person or a group) 3. skilful

(b. good at doing sth., especially sth. that needs ability or training) 4. cure

(d. make an illness or a physical problem go away) 5. mental (f. related to thinking or the mind) 6. trick

(g. sth. done to fool someone else, or as a joke) 7. motto

(e. a short sentence or phrase that tells the aims and beliefs of a person or a group) 8. intelligence (a. the ability to learn, understand and think about sth.)

Step VI. Detailed-reading (No.12~17)

Listen to the MP3 of the text.

According to the reading strategy, try to divide the text into three parts. Format
