People always decorate and change the appearance of their bodies in many different ways. Body piercing (刺破) is one of the

1

and most interesting forms of

modification. But nowadays the

3

for piercing the body have changed. It has more to

4

fashion than with culture. Body piercing has been

5

by many cultures for many centuries. This

6

is estimated as old as five thousand years. Body piercing was often identified with

7

and power. Egyptian Pharaohs pierced their navels (肚脐) as a rite of passage. Mayans pierced their tongues as a spiritual ritual (仪式). Nowadays this

8

and tribal practice has entered the mainstream. The big

9

is that it is now seen as an example of self expression and personal

10

of choice. In our

society a person can pierce his / her body

any reason, without specific rules or limits to

13 . Another reason for the

popularity of piercing is that it can be viewed and

15

as a trendy expression. One can take out the jewelry if one wants to and re-transform one’s

17

and popularity of this “ piercing renaissance (复兴)”

18

the fact that, unlike many centuries ago, people can pierce many different parts of their bodies. However, piercing can involve some

only arise if the piercing studio is not a formal one. The client should pay close attention and keep well informed so as to avoid diseases. 1. A. oldest B. funniest C. newest D. latest 新课标第一网系列资料

A Our daughter Kerrin, a student at Boston University, had been home for a week-end visit, and I dropped her off at the bus station just in time for her back to college. After Kerrin’s bus had gone and I was driving away, I noticed that she had left her purse on the passenger seat. Worried that she would arrive in Boston without money or keys to her room, I called my wife, Bette Jean, on the car phone, explaining why I would be late. B The lower East Side is neither rich nor beautiful, but it can be a good place to shop. On Sundays, its streets are crowded with visitors and shoppers like these. They are trying to find a coat or a pair of shoes at a good price. Most people prefer to shop in the big department stores like Macy’s, Gimbel’s, or Bloomingdale’s because there they can find clothing, furniture, toys, and food in one store. Bracelets (手镯) and rings shine in the windows of Canal Street, and wedding dresses fill the stores of Grant Street. Rice is an important part of many people's diets. Researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health in Massachusetts have released a report about rice. It shows that eating white rice increases the risk of diabetes(糖尿病). However, eating brown rice reduces the risk of the disease.

The World Health Organization says more than two hundred twenty million people worldwide have diabetes. Diabetes results when the body cannot effectively use the sugar it produces. The men and women who took part in the study were asked about their diet and day-to-day activities, as well as any pre-existing diseases. The study found that the people who ate five or more servings of white rice per week had a seventeen percent increased risk of developing diabetes. But those who ate two or more servings of brown rice a week had an eleven percent reduced risk of getting the disease. Brown rice is the grain in its natural form. White rice results after it has been refined. This involves removing 新课标第一网系列资料

the outer cover, including the husk, bran (糠) and germ. Only the inner white kernel(谷粒) is left. White rice is often enriched to replace some nutrients lost during the refining process. Qi Sun is the leading writer of the report. He says the outer parts of brown rice slow down the work of the body's digestive enzymes (酶) into starch (淀粉). This means that the release of sugar into the bloodstream is slower after eating brown rice compared to white rice. A diet of foods that quickly release sugar into the bloodstream has been linked with a greater risk of diabetes. The exact reason for this is not known. Doctor Sun says less refined grains have more nutritional value than refined grains. He says replacing white rice with whole grains like whole wheat or barley could result in a thirty-six percent lower chance of developing diabetes. However, brown rice does not last as long as white rice because of the oil-rich layer of bran. This makes it less usable in poor communities.

4. According to the text, what does the author suggest we should do? A. Replace white rice with brown rice.

B. Eat two or more servings of brown rice a week.

C. Do research to find the exact reason.

D. Eat white rice in poor areas for diabetes. 5. What is the main idea of the text? A. Eating brown rice doesn't develop diabetes.

B. How diabetes results when people eat white rice. C. Refining white rice is not good for people's health.

D. Eating white rice increases the risk of diabetes.

B

Is there anything more important than health? I don’t think so. “Health is the greatest wealth.” wise people say. You can’t be good at your studies or work well when you are ill. If you have a headache, toothache, backache, earache or bad pain in the stomach, if you complain of a bad cough, if you run a high temperature and have a bad cold, or if you suffer from high or low blood pressure, I think you should go to the doctor.

The doctor will examine your throat, feel your pulse, test your blood pressure, take your temperature, sound your heart and lungs, test your eyes, check your teeth or have your chest X-rayed. After that he will advise some treatment, or some medicine. The only thing you have to do is to follow his advice. Speaking about doctor’s advice, I can’t help telling you a funny story.

An old gentleman came to see the doctor. The man was very ill. He told the doctor about his weakness, memory loss and serious problems with his heart and lungs. The doctor examined him and said there was no medicine for his disease. He told his patient to go to a quiet place for a month and have a good rest. He also advised him to eat a lot of meat, drink two glasses of red wine every day and take long walks. In other words, the doctor advised him to follow the rule: “Eat at pleasure, drink with measure and enjoy life as it is.” The doctor also said that if the man wanted to be well again, he shouldn’t smoke more than one cigarette a day. A month later the 新课标第一网系列资料

gentleman came into the doctor’s office. He looked cheerful and happy. He thanked the doctor and said that he had never felt a healthier man.

C. didn’t smoke

D. began to learn to smoke 10. Which of the following is NOT true?

C Maybe ten-year-old Elizabeth put it best when she said to her father, “But, Dad, you can’t be healthy if you’re dead.”

Dad, in a hurry to get home before dark so he could go for a run, had forgotten to wear his safety belt- a mistake 75% of the US population make every day. The big question is why.

There have been many myths about safety belts ever since their first appearance in cars some forty years ago. The following are three of the most common.

Myth Number One: It’s best to be “thrown clear” of a serious accident.

Truth: Sorry, but any accident serious enough to “throw you clear” is also going to be serious enough to give you a very bad landing. And chances are that you’ll have traveled through a wind shield (挡风玻璃)or door to do it. Studies show that chances of dying after a car accident are twenty-five times greater in cases where people are “thrown clear".

Myth Number Two: Safety belts “trap” people in cars that are burning or sinking in water.

Truth: Sorry again, but studies show that people knocked unconscious(昏迷)due to not wearing safety belts have a greater chance of dying in these accidents. People wearing safety belts are usually protected to the point of having a clear head to free themselves from such dangerous situations, not to be trapped in them.

Myth Number Three: Safety belts aren’t needed at speeds of less than 30 miles per hour.

Truth: When two cars traveling at 30 mph hit each other, an unbelted driver would meet the windshield with a force equal to diving headfirst into the ground from a height of 10 meters.

11. Why did Elizabeth say to her father, “But, Dad, you can’t be healthy if you’re dead”?

12. The reason Father was in a hurry to get home was that he __________.

A. wasn’t feeling very well

B. hated to drive in the dark C. wanted to take some exercise D. didn’t want to be caught by the police

13. According to the text, the “thrown clear” of a serious accident is very dangerous because you _________.

A. may be knocked down by other cars B. may get seriously hurt being thrown out of the car C. may find it impossible to get away from the seat D. may get caught in the car door

14. Some people prefer to drive without wearing a safety belt because they believe ________.

A. the belt prevents them from escaping in an accident B. they will be unable to think clearly in an accident C. they will be caught when help comes D. cars catch fire easily 15. what is the advice given in the text?

A. Never drive faster than 30 mile an hour.

B. Try your best to save yourself in a car accident.

C. Never forget to wear the safety belt while driving.

D. Drive slowly while you're not wearing a safety belt. 第二节(共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项中有两项为多余选项。

Have you ever felt sick to your stomach during a test? Have you ever been so worried about something that you ended up with a terrible headache? If so, then you know what it's like to feel stress. You've probably heard people say, "Wow, I'm really stressed out.” _16__ But children have lots of things going on in their lives that can cause stress, too. What is stress? Stress is what you feel when you are worried or uncomfortable about something. This worry in your mind can make your body feel bad. You may feel angry, frustrated, scared, or afraid --- which can give you a stomachache or a headache. What causes stress? Plenty of things can cause stress in a child's life.__17__Good or normal stress might show up when you're called on in class or when you have to give a report. Have you ever gotten butterflies in your stomach or sweaty hands? Those can be signs of good stress. _18_ For example, you may do a better job on your book report if the anxiety inspires you to prepare well before you get up and read it to the class. But bad stress can happen if the stressful feelings keep going over time. You may not feel well if your parents are fighting, if a family member is sick, if you're having problems at school, or if you're going through anything else that makes you upset every day. __19____ Once you recognize that you're feeling stressed, there are several things you can do.
