Step I

Review

Review three stories about King Bruce, Helen Keller and Gou Jian and their similarities in Warming Up.

Purpose: review similar spirits coming in the reading text in order to lead in. Similarities:

Beginning: Life was a failure. 

The end: Great success was achieved. 

How: Great determination and perseverance are shown. (Teacher: Yesterday we learned about three stories about three persons with strong will. Who are they and what’s their story? Let’s review together. •

Robert Bruce was defeated and hiding in a hole on a hill from England. He was inspired by a working spider to continue fighting. At last he became the first Scottish King. •

Helen Keller, who lived in a world of silence and darkness, has become a famous writer by struggling against her illness with the help of her tutor Sullivan. Book 10 Unit 1 A Successful Failure 教学设计

第2页

•

After beaten by Wu and set free home, Gou Jian never forgot his sufferings and strengthened his determination by tasting a bitter gall-bladder and sleeping on firework. Eventually he defeated the King of Wu. As for these three people, life for them was a failure at the very beginning. However, they achieved great success at last. During their struggling, they showed great determination and perseverance. Today we are going to start a new text which shows the same spirits. The title is quite interesting: a successful failure.) Step II

Reading

a

Skimming: work for a general idea Purpose: skimming is a basic reading skill of reading. By skimming some additional information, students can have a general idea of the text. Title: A successful failure Quote: If at first you don’t succeed, try and try again. ---- W C Fields Introduction: Perce Blackborow joined an expedition with Sir Ernest Shackleton to Antarctica on the ship Endurance in August 1914. Shackleton was one of the most famous explorers of his day and it was considered a great honour to be part of any expedition he led. Date: August 29th, 1916 Book 10 Unit 1 A Successful Failure 教学设计

第3页

Pictures: (on page 2 & 3) (Teacher: There would be some information that can help us make some prediction before we go into a text. Here we can find TITLE, QUOTE, INTRODUCTION, DATE and PICTURES. From these information we can get a general idea of the text that we are going to read. For example, which kind of writing it is? A diary, judging from the DATE. Some elements of a text: who are the heroes-- Perce Blackborow and Sir Ernest Shackleton; what happened—carried out an expedition; what’s their destination -- Antarctica; how did they go there -- on the ship Endurance; when did they do it -- in August 1914. And the quote shows us the spirit behind it — try and try again. At last, we can predict an ending from the title and two pictures—failure, iceberg and crash.) b

Pre-reading: Purpose: introduce the basic reading skill and the elements of a reading passage. 

What happened? 

Who is/are the hero/characters?

When did the story happen? 

Where did the story happen? 

Why did it take place? 

How did the story develop? (Teacher: With a general idea of the text, let’s begin our work today. Book 10 Unit 1 A Successful Failure 教学设计

第4页

Usually in a Chinese class, teachers told us there were four elements in a reading passage: when, where, who and what, which guide us to read and interpret a passage. In English, we have six elements, 5 Ws and 1 H: what, who, when, where, why and how. To have a reading of the text, we will follow the route: What happened? Who is/are the hero/characters? When did the story happen? Where did the story happen? Why did it take place? How did the story develop?) c

Group work: Find out the information missing in the chart Purpose: use skimming to find out the objective information including when, where, who and what. Sample chart: when

Time: July, 1914→

August, 1914→

January 18th, 1915→

April 9th, 1916→ before the ship sank→

after they settled on Elephant Island (5) → after they settled on Elephant Island (22) → August 29th, 1916 (Teacher: Now I’d like you to divide into 8 groups, each with a TIME indication. Let’s see which group is the first to complete the chart. You can use skimming to find out the missing information as soon as possible. Ok, let’s check the answers: Book 10 Unit 1 A Successful Failure 教学设计

where

who

what

In July, 1914, on land Perce Blackborow found the advertisement of the expedition In August, 1914 on the Endurance Perce Blackborow joined the expedition to Antarctica.

On January18th, 1915 when getting close to Antarctica the crew of 28 got stuck in pack ice. On April 9th, 1916 before the ship sank, on Elephant Island the crew of 28 moved and camped there. After they settled on Elephant Island, from South Georgia Sir Ernest Shackleton with five men went to bring help. After they settled on Elephant Island on Elephant Island 22 men waited for help. August 29th, 1916 on Elephant Island Perce Blackborow wrote the diary.) d

Scanning: work for “why”

Purpose: after finding out four objective elements, students have a clearer picture of the structure of the text in mind. It’s time for them to work for comprehension by scanning, another skill of reading. 1.

Why did they fail to get to the South Pole? 

Got stuck in the ice. 2.

Why did five others with the captain go to South Georgia while 22 were left on the Elephant Island? 

To seek rescue. Book 10 Unit 1 A Successful Failure 教学设计

第6页

(Teacher: after we found out the objective elements of the text, we can go for some comprehension. Please scan the text and find out the answers to these two questions about “why”.) e

Rearranging: work for “how”

Purpose: “how the story develops” is the last element. By rearranging some disordered clues, students would clearly figure out the development of the story. 

The ship was stuck and sank.

(3) 

Set sail. (2) 

Moved to camp on Elephant Island; went to South Georgia to bring help. (5) 

Join in the expedition. (4) 

Self-rescue. (1) (Teacher: Now it’s turn to find out “how”. Please rearrange these clues and you will easily find out how the story develops.) f

Oral practice: retelling Purpose: all the details have been done and it’s necessary for students to recall the whole story by retelling the story according to the clues above. •

Join in the expedition. •

Set sail. •

The ship was stuck and sank. Book 10 Unit 1 A Successful Failure 教学设计

第7页

•

Self-rescue. •

Moved to camp on Elephant Island; went to South Georgia to bring help. (Teacher: with the above clues, I’d like you to retell the story. Please practice in a group of two.) g

Comprehension: work out a summary Purpose: after retelling, a passage with missing words would place a deeper impression. •

Perce Blackborow joined an expedition with Sir Ernest Shackleton to Antarctica on the ship “Endurance” in August 1914. On January 18th, 1915, their ship became stuck in pack ice as they approached their destination. Due to their perseverance, they were able to move to Elephant Island and camp there before the ship sank. Captain Shackleton with five men went to South Georgia to seek rescue, leaving the rest 22 men, waiting on the island. (Teacher: you have done a good job. Now please look at the screen and fill in the blank to fulfill the summary.

Let’s read it aloud together.) Step III

Conclusion: Purpose: interpret the title. a

Question time: ask the students to think about the title again and share their opinions Book 10 Unit 1 A Successful Failure 教学设计

第8页

Purpose: it’s time for us to go back to the title to interpret the title which seems contradictory to conclude the text. A Successful Failure •

The expedition that Shackleton led was a failure

when they didn’t reach their goal. •

They gained the great experience sailing in Antarctica and the knowledge of self-rescue and seeking rescue, which was a great success to them and also a contribution to human beings.

(Teacher: today we read a story about a sea disaster in Antarctica. When finishing reading, we can have a better understanding of the title. The expedition that Shackleton led was a failure

when they didn’t reach their goal. Why is it meanwhile successful? They gained the great experience sailing in Antarctica and the knowledge of self-rescue and seeking rescue, which was a great success to them and also a contribution to human beings.) b

Reading aloud: Shackleton’s words

Purpose: provide some supplementary information –

Shackleton’s words to help students have a better understanding of the title. Shackleton’s words

You are right, Sir, we failed. We failed to reach the South Pole. I turned back. I chose life over death for myself and for my friends, which is why I am here to tell you about it tonight. But others follow in our Book 10 Unit 1 A Successful Failure 教学设计

footsteps…taking our route…And if they should fail, then I will try again. Because I believe it is in our nature to explore, to reach out into the unknown. The only true failure… would be not to explore at all.

(Teacher: now please look at the screen for Shackleton’s words which will prove how we interpreted the title. Let’s read it together.) Step IV

Homework

1.

Finish Ex. 1, P4. 2.

Read the passage again to make sure you’ve a good understanding of it. 3.

Try to say a few words about what would happen next. (Teacher: The story hasn’t ended and it will be your homework today to finish exercise 1 on page 4, read the passage again to make sure you’ve a good understanding of it and try to say a few words about what would happen next.) A Successful Failure Similarities: beginning, ending, spirit Prediction: a diary, iceberg, a ship crash 5 Ws and 1 H: skimming, scanning, retelling

(Appendix 2: 教学反思) 本课旨在阅读方法指导。结合book 10 unit 1 的第一篇reading ,Book 10 Unit 1 A Successful Failure 教学设计
