Senor English _Book 8_ Unit 5_ Meeting your ancestors Learning about language Teaching time: 40 minutes Overall Design

Learning about language aims to develop students’ ability in learning about new words and important expressions in this unit. Meanwhile, students’

vocabulary is expected to be enriched through learning about the words and expressions. In this lesson I mainly show some important words and the usage of some phrases, then ask students to complete relevant tasks, assist them to learn in different sentences and situations,

and build a confidence towards language learning.

First of all, I will greet with my students, then lead them to review the word learned last class. Then read them together. Second explain other important words and phrases to them. I will use graphs and examples to let them understand and learn to use these words. Next, I will give them 5minutes to remember these words, preparing for the following exercises and competition games. In this unit, I will divide students into eight groups. Each group have a person in charge and show their answer and reasons. The first top group will get the privilege to choose the items first. And the last one will have a second test until they pass the exercise. The form of the exercise are ample including Chinese and English translation, fill in the blanks in sentences, blanks in passages and sentence translation or a short composition.

Teaching Context Analysis of teaching material: This is a learning about language lesson. The lesson focuses on learning about some important words and phrases, aiming at letting students grasp the meaning and the usages of these words and phrases.

The topic of this unit is about archaeology—the history research of the our ancestors’ life.

This lesson mainly consists of two parts: discovering useful words and phrases and discovering useful structures. The first parts is intended to teach new words with the help of different exercises so as to build in students’ mind a source of new words. Then the second section aims at providing students with the the present progressive structures

and expressions to talk about their experience of doing research and describe their findings. Therefore, the two sections of this unit, abiding by the “output after input”

sequential principle in teaching, progress step by step, and proceed from experience to exploration and finally to language application. All these can effectively realize the objectives of improving students language and learning skill. Analysis of students:

The objects of this lesson are students in Senior Three. Students in this degree have already learned enough words to understand the passage, thus they must have mastered some skills of remembering words and how to master the usage of words and structures.

However, senior students lack the ability of judge and analysis the present progressive

structure and some students have on confidence of English learning. Therefore, it requires teachers to set up the tasks from easy to the advanced to guide them.

Teaching Aims

Aims of knowledge: (1) master and use some important words, such as: race, distinct, hard, major and so on. (2) be able to use the present progressive structure leading by what, that, which, when. Where, if/whether...

Aims of ability: (1) be able to understand the meaning and usages of these new words. (2) master some relevant words and phrases.

(3) review the present progressive sentence structures. (4) be able to use new words and present progressive to make some sentences.

Aims of emotion: (1)

taste the happiness of communicating in English. (2)

build confidence towards basic words and sentence structure exercises. (3)

be active and cooperative in team work, enjoy the sense of achievement in cooperation.

Aims of strategy: (1)

master some methods of independent study. (2)

be well versed in language transforming input to output. Key Points and Difficult Points

4. flash cards. Teaching Procedure Step 1：Lead-in: (2 minute) Have a small conversation with students on travels:

Do you like traveling?

Can you speak out some places you have visited before?

Then I will show students a video clip concerning ancient things used by our ancestors and ask students whether they know what they are and where can we find them. The purpose of my design:

(1) to catch students’ attention and arouse their interests.

(2)to liven up the lesson and lead in the topic —Zhoukoudian Caves.

Step 2: Review (1)

Step 3: Explain

(1) explain new words and phrases to students by showing them the usage and sentence situations.

(2)give some direct examples to students.

The purpose of my design: to let students learn new words and phrases directly.

to let students know the situation these words should be used.

Step 4: Practise (1) complete the passage using the correct form of the words and phrases. (2)complete these sentences using the correct form of the phrases

(3)complete these sentences with words or phrases from the text.

The purpose of my design: to make students understand the details the new words. Based on the information the sentences situation, students can directly know the usage of these words in practice.

Step 5: Useful structure (1) ask students to under the structures in the passage and observe the charactors of each sentences. (3)

explain the usage of the present progressive structures and the situation it could be used. The purpose of my design: to let students learn about the useful present progressive structures according to explanation and observation.

Step 6:

Game

(1) design a words competition game between eight groups. Each group have 1 minutes to circle the words according to information given by me.

The purpose of my design: this section aims at training students’ ability of reaction and memory. Using the form of game could make students more interested in the words memory and more excited to do it actively.

Step 8: Homework: 2

Finish the exercises on the paper, including multiple choice , filling blanks and finish passages. The purpose of my design: use mixture forms of exercise to strengthen the students words impression and the language usage. Teaching Evaluation
