(T shows four examples to the Ss on the screen.)

2.

①

The phrase “…” could be replaced by________. ②

The word “…” in paragraph… refers to________.

③

What is the meaning of the underlined word in the

paragraph?/What does the underlined word mean? ④

Which of the following is the closest/nearest in meaning to the

phrase “…”? ⑤

According to the passage, the word“…”is known as____. ⑥Which of the following words can take the place of the word “…”? 3.

Step3 Discussion of the ways of Content Clue 1).T gives the Ss examples on the screen; then get them to guess the words underlined and circle the content clue of every question(学生学案). 2). Ask them to summarize the ways according to the above examples in their own words.(根据例子要求学生小组讨论、总结看看每个例题是哪种猜词方法。)

3).(老师再呈现6种猜词方法)T shows the six ways on the screen one by one。

like, similarly等。

Eg: Animals have different living habits. Some like to look for food at daytime and sleep at night, but some like to sleep at day time and prowl at night.

Eg:Millions of animals die each year on roads, the highway administration reports. In fact, only about 80 ocelots, an endangered wild cat exist in the US today. The main reason? Roadkill.

Exercise1:

1. Not every historic

mansion,

church, battle site, theatre and other public halls can be preserved. 2. We should, therefore, learn to choose our words carefully and use them accurately, or they will make our speech silly and vulgar. 3. Their friends laughed at them, and my sister felt wretched, very unhappy. 大厦

有的文章作者为了增强表达效果,会用一对反义词揭示事物的不同点,形成鲜明的对比,这时只要把握其中的一词,就不难推出另一词的含义,这种句子多见unlike, although, but, yet, while, on the contrary, on the other hand, for one thing, for another, however, but, yet, while, whereas , the other way around(about), Just the opposite, instead of, rather than等信息词。

Eg1:Unlike her gregarious sister,Jane is a shy, unsociable person who does not like to go to parties or to make new friends.

Eg2:This boy is not stupid;on the contrary,no one could be more intelligent than him.

Exercise2:

1.One idea about business is that it can be treated as a game of perfect information. Quite the reverse, business polite, life itself is games which we must normally play with very imperfect information.

A. Quite right.

B. Time enough.

C. Most unlike.

D. Just the opposite.

2.Unlike the Unite States where many different nationalities make up the population, Japan’s population is quite homogeneous. 3. Thousands of people got stuck in lifts. But no one panicked, we passed the time telling stories. 4. Most of us agreed; however, Gary dissented. 5. He is homely, not at all as handsome as his brother. 答案:1.D

如or to be, to mean, that is(to say), mean, stand for, namely, to refer to, in other words等,有时也以同位语、定语从句的形式出现,或用破折号,括弧来表示。

Wrestling is the game which is played by two strong people;one player tried to get the other down on the floor.

Exercise3:

Perhaps they will spend their days gollocking to make new spundels,

or struggling with their ballalators through the scribe. These words, which I have just made up, have to stand for things and ideas that we simply can’t think of.

Q:

Spundels and ballalators are used in the text to refer to_____. A. tools used in farming

B. ideas about modern life

C. unknown things in the future

D. hunting skills in the Stone Age [答案与解析]C

从下文的定语丛句which I have just made up,及stand for things and ideas that we simply can’t think of.

标志性词语如such as, like, for example, for instance常连接同义词组

。

例1:I have found Lucy is quite generous, for example, whenever she meets a beggar, she gives some coins to him.

2:You can take any of the periodicals: The World of English, Foreign Language Teaching in School, or English Learning.

Exercise4:

1. Many United Nations emloyees are polyglots: Mr.Simpson, for example, speaks five languages fluently.

2. The largest player---Shanghai Bashi Tourism Car Rental Center offers a wide variety of choices---Deluxe Sedans, Minivans, Station Wagons, Coaches, Santana Sedans are the big favorite. 3. When writing an article, we often use similes, such as “brave as a lion” and “quick like lightning”.

Not every historic mansion, church, battle site, theatre and public halls can be preserved. 常用标志词语and ,or,etc. Exercise5: 1:My uncle was a nomad,an incurable wanderer who could never stay in one place.

2(2005浙江B篇):In fact, only about 80 ocelots, an endangered wild cat, exist in the U.S.today .

3: A major theme in his work is South Africa’s former apartheid system, which divided whites from blacks.

Eg1:

Young Hoover died.Over a thousand people attended his funeral.

Eg2:

All the houses in the city collapsed during the strong earthquake.

Eg3:The door was so low that I hit my head on the lintel.

Exercise6:

Rainforests like the Amazon are important for mopping up CO2 from the atmosphere and helping to slow global warming. The underlined phrase “mopping up” in the second para. means__________. A. cleaning up

B. taking in

C. wiping out

D. giving out [答案与解析]B

代词one,it,that,he,him或them等在英语文章中使用频繁,可以指上文提到的人或事物。

例如:(2005年全国卷,C篇) Demands for pigeon-delivered money stopped as soon as the press reported the story. And even if they start again,Chen holds little hope of catching the criminal.“We have more important things to do,”he said.

52.The underlined word “they” in the last paragraph refers to____. A. criminals B. pigeons C. the stolen cars D. demands for money 分析:从文中最后一段可知,they应当对应该段前面的“Demands for pigeon-delivered money”。

……“Oh?”Mon said, “that's Mama's quilt.”

I spread the quilt. It looked as if a group of school children had pieced it together: irrugular designs, childish pictures, a crooked line on the right. “Grandmother made this?” I said, surprised. My grandmother was a master at making quilts. This didn't certainly look like any of the quils she had made. “Yes, right before she died. I brought it home with me last year and made some changes,” she said. “I'm still working on it. See, this is what I've done so far.”

I looked at it more closely. She had made straight a crooked line. At the center of the quilt, she had stitched a piece of cloth with those words: “My mother made many quilts. She didn't get all line straight. But I think this is beautiful. I want to see it finished. Her last quilt.” …….. 58. The underlined word “crooked” in the passage most probably means __________.

(2010重庆A篇)

One morning more than thirty years ago, I entered the Track Kitchen, a restaurant where everyone from the humblest(卑微的) to the most powerful came for breakfast. I noticed an empty chair next to an elderly, unshaven man, who looked somewhat disheveled. He was wearing a worn-out hat and was alone. I asked if I might join him. He agreed quietly and I sat down to have my breakfast.

We cautiously began a conversation and spoke about a wide rang of things. We never introduced ourselves. I was concerned that he might have no money and not be able to afford something to eat. So as I rose to go back to the counter and buy a second cup of coffee, I asked,

"My I get you something ?"

"A coffee would be nice."

Then I bought him a cup of coffee, We talked more, and he accepted another cup of coffee, Finally, I rose to leave, wished him well, and headed for the exit. At the door I met one of my friends. He asked,

"How did you get to know Mr. Galbreath?"

"Who?"

"The man you were sitting with. He is chairman of the Board of Churchill Downs."

I could hardly believe it. I was buying, offering a free breakfast, and feeling pity for one of the world's richest and most powerful men!

My few minutes with Mr. Galbreath changed my life. Now I try to treat everyone with respect, no matter who I think they are, and no matter another human being with kindness and sincerity. 56. What does the underlined word "disheveled" mean? A. Unfriendly.

B. Untidy.

C. Gentle.

D. Kind.

I noticed an empty chair next to an elderly, unshaven man何下文中的He was wearing a worn-out hat and was alone.

Then he would carry them along the path, one on each side, to the flowerbeds. The new bucket was very proud of itself. It could carry a full bucket of water without a single drop spilled (溢出). The old bucket felt very ashamed because of its holes: before it reached the flowerbeds, much water had leaked along the path……

56. What does the underlined word “dilapidated” probably mean?

A. Dirty

One of my wonderful memories is about a Christmas gift . Unlike other gifts, it came without wrap(包装). On September 11th ,1958,Mum gave birth to Richard. After she brought him home from hospital, she put him in my lap, saying, “I promised you a gift , and here it is.”

What an honor!I turned four a month earlier and none of my friends had such a baby doll of their own. I played with it day and night. I sang to it. I told it stories .I told it over and over how much I loved it!

One morning, however, I found its bed empty. My doll was gone! I cried for it. Mum wept and told me that the poor little thing bad been sent to a hospital. It had a fever. For several days I Heard Mum and Dad whispering such words as “hopeless”, “pitiful”, and “dying”, which sounded ominous. Christmas was coming. “Don’t expect any presents this year,” Dad said, pointing at the socks I hung in the living room. “If your baby brother lives, that’ll be Christmas enough.” As he spoke, his eyes filled with tears. A San Francisco has its cable cars. Seattle has its Space Needle. And, Longview has its squirrel bridge. The bridge, which has attracted international attention, is now a local landmark.

The Nutty Narrows Bridge was built in 1963 by a local builder, Amos Peters, to give squirrels a way to cross the busy road without getting flattened by passing cars.

The original bridge was built over Olympia Way on the west edge of the library grounds. Before the bridge was built, squirrels had to avoid traffic to and from the Park Plaza office building where office staff put out a nutty feast for the squirrels. Many times, Peters and others who worked in and near Park Plaza witnessed squirrels being run over.

One day Peters found a dead squirrel with a nut still in its mouth, and that day’s coffee break discussion turned into squirrel safety. The group of businessmen cooked up the squirrel bridge idea and formed a committee to ask the blessing of the City Council(市政会).The Council approved, and Councilwoman Bess LaRiviere named the bridge “Nutty Narrows.”

After architects designed the bridge, Amos Peters and Bill Hutch started Construction, They built the 60-foot bridge from aluminum and lengths of fire hose(消防水带). It cost 1,000.

It didn’t take long before reports of squirrels using the bridge started. Squirrels were even seen guiding their young and teaching them the ropes. The story was picked up by the media, and Nutty Narrows became know in newspapers all over the world.

In 1983, after 20 years of use, Peters took down the worn-out bridge. Repairs were made and crosspieces were replaced. The faded sign was repainted and in July 1983, hundreds of animal lovers attended the completion ceremony of the new bridge.

Peters died in 1984, and a ten-foot wooden squirrel sculpture was placed near the bridge in memory of its builder and his devotion to the project.

D For those who are tired doing the laundry, Samsung has found an answer: a washing machine that can tell you when your laundry is done via a smartphone app(application).

Strange though it may seem —

“my wife already does that”

was a common response among attendees viewing the device when it was introduced at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) this week —

Samsung is just one of many appliance makers racing to install (安装) a large number of internet-connected features in machines in an effort to make them “smart”.

Last year, it was a refrigerator that tweeted. This year, it’s Wi-Fi-enabled laundry

machines and fridges that can tell you when your groceries are going bad.

The washers and dryers, available starting in the spring, connect to any smartphone through a downloadable application. The phone can then be used as a remote control, so the machines can be turned on and off while their owners is at work or on the bus.

Samsung says it’s not just something new —

the app connection actually has some practical uses.

“If you started to dry clothes in the morning and forgot to take them out, you can go to your phone and restart your dryer for the time when come home, so your clothes are refreshed and ready to go,” said spokesperson Amy Schmidt.

The company also says that with electricity rate(电价)varying depending on the time of day, more control over when the machines are used can help save money.

Perhaps, but what they will probably really accomplish is what all good technologies do —enable laziness. Rather than getting up to check on whether the laundry is done, users will instead monitor it on their phones while watching TV.

72. What can be inferred from the common response of the attendees at the CES? A. The machine will be a big success. B. their wives like doing the laundry. C. The machine is unrelated to their life. D. This kind of technology is familiar to them.

73. What can we learn about the new laundry machines? A. They can tell you when your clothes need washing B. They can be controlled with a smartphone

C. They are difficult to operate D. They are sold at a low price 74. We can conclude form Samsung’s statements that ___________.

A. the app connection makes life easier B. it is better to dry clothes in the morning C. smartphone can shorten the drying time

D. we should refresh clothes back at home 75. What is the main idea of the last paragraph? A. The laundry should be frequently checked

B. Lazy people like using such machines C. Good technologies also cause problems

D. Television may help do the laundry.

In his 1930 essay “Economic Possibilities for Our Grandchildren ”, John Keynes, a famous economist, wrote that human needs fall into two classes: absolute needs ,which are independent

of what others have , and relative needs ,which make us feel superior to our fellows. He thought that although relative needs may indeed be insatiable (无止境的) , this is not true of absolute needs.

Keynes was surely correct that only a small part of total spending is decided by the desire for superiority. He was greatly mistaken, however, in seeing this desire as the only source of insatiable demands.

Decisions to spend are also driven by ideas of quality which can influence the demands for almost all goods, including even basic goods like food. When a couple goes out for an anniversary dinner, for example, the thought of feeling superior to others probably never comes to them. Their goal is to share a special meal that stands out from other meals.

There are no obvious limits to the escalation of demand for quality. For example, Porsche, a famous car producer, has a model which was considered perhaps the best sport car on the market Priced at over $120,000, it handles perfectly well and has great speed acceleration. But in 2004, the producer introduced some changes which made the model slightly better in handling and acceleration. People who really care about cars find these small improvements exciting. To get them, however, they must pay almost four times the price.

By placing the desire to be superior to others at the heart of his description of insatiable demands, Keynes actually reduced such demands. However, the desire for higher quality has no natural limits.

72. According to the passage, John Keynes believed that_______. A. desire is the root of both absolute and relative needs B. absolute needs come from our sense of superiority C. relative needs alone lead to insatiable demands D. absolute needs are stronger than relative needs 【解析】同学们要注意,这个题考的不是作者的观点,而是凯恩斯的观点。

73. What do we know about the couple in Paragraph 3? A. They want to show their superiority.

B. They find specialty important to meals. C. Their demands for food are not easily satisfied.

D. Their choice of dinner is related to ideas of quality.

但“the thought of feeling superior to others probably never comes to them”,想借此感受优越奢华生活的念头可能从来没有过。

74. What does the underlined word “escalation” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?

A. Understanding.

B. Increase

C. Difference

75.The author of the passage argues that ______. A. absolute needs have no limits B. demands for quality are not insatiable C. human desires influence ideas of quality D. relative needs decide most of our spending 【解析】按凯恩斯的观点,人类需求分为“绝对需求”和“相对需求”。从文章第一段可知“He thought that although relative needs may indeed be insatiable (无止境的) , this is not true of absolute needs.”(词组be not true of…
