I. Teaching aims and learning objectives By the end of the lesson, the students should be able to: 1. understand the first chapter from The Secret Garden

with the teacher’s help；

2. understand the possible theme of the story; 3. learn how to read a novel and develop a love for reading.

II. Focus of the lesson and predicted area of difficulty 1. Get a brief understanding of the whole story.

2. Analysis the possible theme of the story.

III. Teaching procedures Step 1 Lead-in

1. An introduction to The Secret Garden

(1) The teacher asks the students some questions about the holiday: (2) The teacher introduces the novel The Secret Garden

and its author to the students with the help of the cover of the book.

2. Watch and answer

The teacher shows students a picture and asks: Who are the three children?

3. Read and answer

Students go through the contents. The teacher asks: What can you get from the contents? Reading tip:

Better to read the cover, the contents first. 【设计意图：介绍作品与作者，根据书本封面、小说篇名预测书中主角及可能的故事内容，通过简介使学生了解小说简要内容并猜测故事情节，激发学生阅读欲望。】

Step 2 Understanding the article

1. Mary alone

The teacher asks the following questions to help the students understand the first chapter : (1) Can you guess why Mary is alone?

(2) What personality does Mary have?

【设计意图：问题1指向小说设置的情景分析，并欣赏故事开头——一个好的开篇是一部优秀小说的必备要素。问题2的设计用于激发学生进一步阅读的兴趣。】

2.The crying in the night

Watch the video and answer the following questions to help the students understand why Colin can’t walk : (1) Who is crying?

(2) Why is he crying?

(3)What is his feeling when he is lying on the bed all day long ?

3.The secret garden

(5) How does he feel when he first enters the garden ?

(6) Can you guess whether Colin can walk? Why or why not?

【设计意图：阅读任务旨在从片段欣赏中把握孩子们在秘密花园里的情况，对花中发生的三段状况进行对比致力于培养学生对文本深入理解的能力。问题的设置旨在培养学生表达自己的想法、探究阅读的能力。】

4.Magic （Watch the video and the following questions）

1)What is the magic in the video? 2)What do you think of Colin’s feelings when the magic comes true?

3)What can you see in Colin’s father’s eyes?

【设计意图：通过疑问激发学生课后阅读的兴趣；培养学生良好的读书习惯，有利于学生更好地理解文学作品的内涵。2、3、4阅读题目中分别设置了对Colin心理变化的提问，帮助学生整体理解课文，更好的了解人物的性格变化，理解作者的写作意图。】

Step 4 Doing some exercise and having a discussion on the possible theme of the story.

Step 5 Summary What we should learn from Secret Garden!

Be close to nature Never give up the hope of life Parents should care about their children. What children really need is not superior material conditions, but love from their parents.

IV. Homework 1.Finish reading the book within a week; 2.Complete the reading card for each chapter;
