Finding your way Reading (I) A trip to the zoo 礼河实验学校

I. Teaching aims and learning objectives By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

1. Talk about different animals in the zoo with new words and phrases; 2. Tell people where the place for each kind of animal is; 3. Scan the passage to find the special information.

II. Teaching contents 1. New words and phrases: everybody, straight, on, bamboo, along, road, king, remember, that, dangerous, sound, forest, funny, laugh, giraffe, quite, neck, leaf, north-east, bridge, cross, all day long, make beautiful sounds, make people laugh 2. New structures: Go straight on and you’ll find the Panda House.

Walk along the road.

Turn left, and to the west of the Lion’s Area, you’ll find the World of Birds.

III. Focus of the lesson and predicted area of difficulty 1. To talk about the looks and the habits of the animals. 2. To learn how to get around the zoo.

IV. Teaching procedures Step 1 Lead-in Free talk. T: Look at the pictures and tell me what these places are.

T:Among these places, where do your parents often take you to at the weekend? Why do you go there? 【设计意图：通过生活中熟悉的场景，导入到参观动物园这一主题。】

Step 2 Pre-reading 1. Road signs. T: Today the tour guide is going to lead the students to Sunshine Zoo. To help the students learn more about the zoo, she is showing them some road signs now.

What does this sign mean? What about this one? What should you do when you see this sign?

2. Animals in the zoo. T: Now the tour guide is showing the students some pictures of animals.

(1) What is the animal in the first picture?

What does the panda look like? Learn the new words: panda, cute. (2) What are the animals in the picture? What do you think of lions?

Learn the new words: king, dangerous (3) What animal can you see in the video? What is the animal doing?

What do you think of the animal? Learn the new word: sound (4) Do you know what this animal is? What is special about this animal? What do they eat?

Learn the new words:giraffe, neck, leaf, (5) What is the largest animal on land?

What do its ears look like?

Step 3 While-reading 1. Fast reading. T: Read the passage on Page 44 quickly and answer the following questions. (1) How many kinds of animals are mentioned in the article? (2) What are they? 【设计意图：通过快速阅读，让学生大致了解课文内容。】

2. Intensive reading.

Pandas T: Watch the video and answer the following questions: (1) Where will the students start their trip? Mark it on the map. (2) What animals are they going to see first?

(3) Where do pandas live? Point out where the Panda House is on the map. (4) What do you know about pandas? Do people like pandas?

Lions

T: Watch the video and answer the following questions: (1) What are the students going to see next?

(2) How should they get there? (3) Where are the lions? T: Read this paragraph together and try to get more details. Lions are dangerous. We should never go near them

Birds

T: Watch the video and answer the following questions: (1) What animals will they see next? (2) Where are the birds? Point out where they are on the map. (3) How can we get there? (4) Can you say more about birds? Complete the table.

Monkeys

T: Watch the video and answer the following questions: (1) What can the students see if they walk on?

(2) Where do Monkeys live?

(3) Where is it?

(4) What do you thinks of monkeys? Fill in the blanks.

Giraffes and elephants

T: Watch the video and answer the following questions: (1) Are there any other animals to see? What are they? Listen to the tour guide’s introduction and find the answers.

(2) Read the paragraph and mark where these two animals are on the map. (3) What do giraffes and elephants look like?Fill in the blanks. 【设计意图：通过听、读等形式，将文章中所涉及的各个动物的地理位置、样貌特点等梳理清楚，让学生基本了解文章的主要内容。】

Step 4 Post-reading 1. True or false questions. T: Read the whole passage again and tell if the statements about the zoo are right or not. 2. Complete the conversation. T: Millie is telling Wendy about Sunshine Zoo. Complete their conversation. 3. Be a tour guide. T: There are some foreign visitors in the zoo. Would you please be a tour guide and show them around? The animal(s) in the red circle is the one they would like to see. The picture of the foreigners shows their location.
