Text analysis: The passage is a typical argumentation, in which the writer raised a question as a topic, then discussed it from two different aspects and finally drew a conclusion. When focusing on one aspect, the author illustrates each point with a topic sentence and some supporting details, which is an ideal model to train students’

argumentation writing (topic sentence- supporting details- conclusion). Besides, some sentence patterns about showing opinions can be concluded and accumulated by students to write supporting details. Apart from the structure, another feature of this passage is that in each supporting detail, the author states the advantage or disadvantage together with one more sentence to give some further reasons to make it more convincing, which will show students how to extend sentences so as to make enrich the content.



Students analysis:

These are students of science in Senior Two, most of whom are boys and not so interested or hardworking in learning English, especially when it comes to writing. They are often discouraged by making too many mistakes or having no ideas about how to make the passage logical. However, these boys really have creative thoughts and sharp points when discussing some hot issues or other interesting topics, so if they are guided step by step, to experience the passage, find out the rules, conclude some useful language materials and practice what they’ve learned, they will be greatly encouraged to write down something.


