Unit 2 Welcome to the unit

【教学目标】

By the end of this lesson, students should be able to: 1.

Write down more words about sports than they knew after learning; 2.

Talk about their opinions on some topics concerning sports, i.e. their favorite sport; 3.

Practise their spoken English through describing pictures; 4.

Learn something from the spirit of sports.

【教学重点】

1.

vocabulary about sports; 2.

description of pictures on p21--students are expected to know some history or background information about these sports.

【教学难点】

Students might feel it difficult to express their ideas with such limited vocabulary. Thus, the teacher should provide more hints.

【教学方法】

Task-based approach; communicative approach; group work and pair work

【教学过程】

Step 1: Warming up (Guessing game) 1.

Teacher describes some famous sports stars with key words, and has students guess who they are.  Yao Ming

Shanghai, tall, NBA (Houston Rockets)  Liu Xuan

Changsha, actress, gymnastics (《我和我的父亲》、《我的美丽乡愁》、《女拳》......)  Deng Yaping

Zhengzhou, Olympic champion, table tennis, Qsinghua, 人民日报副秘书长

Step 2: Brainstorming 1.

Teacher introduces this part after saying “Deng Yaping can play table tennis while Liu Xiang does 110-meter hurdles. Then what sports do you know? And what sports can you play?”

Teacher invites 8 students to share their answers, and write them on the blackboard. -- competition (two students form a group; write as many words as possible within one minute)

Then the teacher displays some pictures with sport’s name in three categories. Ball games volleyball, basketball, football, table tennis, golf, badminton, baseball, rugby, ice hockey, bowling, snooker, etc.

Track and field long jump, high jump, pole vault (撑杆跳), discus (铁饼), shot-put (铅球), relay race, hurdles, etc.

Gymnastics Men events-- rings, horizontal bar (单杠), parallel bars (双杠), vault (跳马), pommel horse (鞍马), floor exercise (自由体操), etc. Women events-- balance beam (平衡木), uneven bars (高低杠), vault, floor exercise, etc.

Step 3: Picture talking 1.

Have students carefully look at the pictures on p2 and talk about each of them. Teacher presents some descriptions of these sports first. Then have students do the ‘picture-talking’ activity.

Students talk about their ideas, using the following sentence patterns. Questions

Which do you like, ... or ... ?

Which do you prefer, ... or ... ?

What’s your favorite sport?

Why do you like ... best?

Answers

Table tennis, I think.

I like table tennis best.

I prefer table tennis to...

Because it is convenient for people to play and doesn’t require much equipment.

-- Students can use any sport that they like and express ideas. -- Pair work.

Step 4: Discussion 1.

Divide students into groups of four and give them five minutes to prepare. 2.

Invite students to share in the front, reporting their answers. 3.

Make sure that all of them have a chance to speak. Question 1: Why do you think sport is so popular? --- HINTS: enjoy popularity; refresh; reinvigorate sore muscles, stiff necks, blurred vision; lose weight; muscular; quality of life; be concerned with...

Question 2: No matter what kind of sport do you take part in, what are the basic qualities you need to possess in order to be successful in that sport? --- HINTS: team work, cooperation; do one’s best, make great endeavors; never give up; never cheat; be friendly

Assignment 1.

Search the Internet to find more information about Olympic games; 2.

Make a good preparation for the Reading part.
