Unit 4 Pygmalion Act two--Making the Bet

Teaching aims: 1.

Students learn something about the play Pygmalion. 2.

Look at the pictures. Do you remember the girl? What about the man？And what about this one? In the last period, we know they are the three main characters of the play Pygmalion, and they had their fateful meetings. And do you want to know what happens among them in the following? This class, we will go on learning the play Act Two---Making the Bet. Step3. Skimming Now, please read the play quickly and then fill in the following form.

Step4. Careful reading

Read the play carefully and then answer the following questions. 1. What are Higgins and Pickering doing when Eliza comes? 2.Who shows Eliza in? 3.Why does Higgins think Eliza is no use at all? 4.Why does Eliza come to visit Higgins? 5.Why does Higgins agree to teach Eliza? 6.What does Higgins think Eliza need to improve? （As students answer these questions, teacher writes the answers on the blackboard.）

Step5. Appreciate the play

(While students are watching the play, teacher guiding students to analyze the qualities of each character.) In the last period, we know the characters of each person. We know Eliza is emotional, anxious, unsure, ambitious. Higgins is rude, impatient, self-important, superior. Pickering is polite, generous, confident. Now, let’s go on appreciating the play and further analyze the three main characters’ qualities through their languages and behaviour.

Step6. Retell the play. Now, let’s look at the phrases on the blackboard and tell me what the meanings of them are. Can you retell the scene with these phrases? Now, I give you several minutes to practice retelling the scene. (Several minutes later, students retell the scene one by one.) Step7. Homework
