Unit Five Do you like pears?
Let’s learn & Let’s chant
(PEP, Book 2)
Topic of Unit Five: this unit mainly deals with fruits and our likes or dislikes to different kinds of fruits. This lesson is the first lesson of this unit. It consists of two parts: let’s learn and let’s chant. In let’s learn part, there are four new words: apple, pear, banana, orange, and three new sentence patterns: “Do you like sth.?” and its answers: “Yes, I do.” “No, I don’t.” The chant helps students consolidate the new words. This lesson is very close to students’ daily life, so I believe that they will be very interested in this lesson. Analysis of the teaching material
Analysis of the students
Students in Grade 3 are innocent and lively; they have great curiosity in new things, for example, popular songs, interesting cartoons and games, colorful pictures and cute toys. They have learned English for less than one year, so their English knowledge are limited, but most of them are very interested in English learning and English speaking. Based on the principle of “Learning Through Play”, I will try my best to make my class more lively and interesting.
Knowledge Aim:students can master the four new words: apple, orange, pear, banana; students can understand and say the core sentence pattern:Do you like...? And answer it with “Yes, I do./No, I don’t.”
Teaching Aims
Ability Aim: Enables students to use the key words and sentence patterns appropriately according to practical occasions. Emotion Aim: students can understand that fruit is good for their health through the saying: an apple a day keeps the doctor away. Teaching key points and difficult points
Key points:Four new words “apple, pear, banana, orange” and the new sentence patterns “Do you like sth.?” and its answers: “Yes, I do.” “No, I don’t.”
Difficult points: Pronunciations of the words “apple” and “orange”.

Real fruits, heart-shaped word cards, fruit cards, multimedia coursewares, etc.
Teaching procedures Activities of teacher
Say hello to students; simply introduce myself, and talk with students. Divide students into two teams: “Chen Jie” & “John”, let them compete with the other team for rewards. Sing a song “Apple Red” together with students, accompanying dancing movements.
A. Show a “fruit heart” with PPT, getting students familiar with different kinds of fruit.
B. Use a “magic-bag” to present the new words: invite four students come to the platform and take the fruits out of the bag.
C.Teach the new words in chanting forms. Emphasize the pronunciations of “apple” and “orange”.
D.Show students with some photos: I’m buying some fruit in a supermarket. Teach them the plural forms of “apple, pear, banana, orange”. Insert the plural forms into the new sentence patterns: “Do you like...?” “Yes, I do.” “No, I don’t.” and teach students to read the new sentences.

Step 3 Presentation
Warm up class atmosphere Stand up and sing together and introduce the theme of with teacher. this lesson--- “fruit” to students.
Answer teacher’s questions: names of the fruits;
Come to the platform and guess fruit.
Clap hands and chant together with teacher
Read after teacher; answer teacher’s questions.
Use real fruits and teacher’s pictures to present the new words and sentences, arousing students’ interests.
Step 4 Practice & Consolidation
A. Quick answer: 7 pictures of fruits move fast one by one
B. Let’s chant
C. Show students with a dialogue between Chen Jie and John, let them imitate the dialogue in pairs.
D. Create a situation: today is sunny, let’s have a picnic. Take out a basket of fruit, inviting 2-3 pairs of students to perform their dialogues in front of their classmates.
E. Story time: the story highlights the theme of this lesson “fruit keeps us happy and healthy”.
F. Sing a song “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” together.
Students race to be the first to answer.
Chant together.
Make dialogues with their classmates with the help of the word cards.
Come to the platform to perform the dialogue.
Read “Sakura Momoko” and “doctor”’s lines ; understand the meaning of the story. Sing the song together with teacher.
Colorful pictures, fierce competition and the chant helps students remember the news words firmly; situational teaching method is used in dialogue practice part; a story and a cheerful English song make students understand
“An apple a day keeps the doctor away” better.
